Yea, it plugs right in! I'm thinking it was need. I finally just had enough of the 80's era Motronic ECU. |

I missed the CAN BUS so I took the CAN TAXI. What exactly are we talking about here, tuning a BMW engine? Sounds great. Where to I sign up?

Sounds REALLY interesting!!
How well do you think your mods will apply to my 05 R1200 RT?? Higher compression than the GS, 12/1 vs 11/1. Regards Bernd (in Orange County) |

Isn't someone supposed to chime in with:
"Don't you think the BMW engineers know more about this bike than anyone else and built it with the latest greatest..." Copy the Ducati 1200 Multistrada computer that way we can have 150hp in sport mode.

All of these mods we're going to make available, deal directly with the fuel injection system and it's foibles. This particular approach to engine mods has only been lightly touched upon thus far. We intend to dive into the deep end of this pool and 'make some waves'.
As such this first device can be used with any of the motoronic EFI based motors and the newer 1200 EFI system as well. But the next few mods after this first one will initially be for the motoronic efi based bikes, with the canbus equipped bikes following a little later. Mostly due to the added complexity of talking to the 1200's ECU. We will be filling in more of the specific details and the results of his research in subsequent posts. We will try to present a complex situation (the algorithm used to run the engine) in a simplified way by describing key specific operational portions of the program one at a time. Then we will tie them together to show how they interact and how we can optimize each of these operational areas to achieve a much better running engine. It may seem like rocket science, only because, it is JJ

I don't have anything to add to this thread but I wanted to post just to express my interest in the work at hand. Very cool.

I can't wait for the Beta test in the frozen North( or at least the Banana Belt
It was about 40f here today and my 1150 always runs better in the cold. Surewould be nice if it felt like that all the time. drcool

16 year old Motronic 2.2 with 90,000mi. I'd like a complete modern replacement ECU. I know, pie-in-the-sky...back to reality, count me as very interested. Thanks for your efforts!

That 16 year old Motronic was born in the 80's. The version in the 1100/1150 is called a Mono Motronic It was designed for throttle body (single injection point) fuel injection systems. It was re-labeled simply Motronic as the OE product for the BMW boxer motor. Because of the 180° opposed cylinder arrangement on the boxer motor, the Mono Motronic ECU can be operated as if it's controlling a single cylinder motor running at twice the RPM. The primary problem with the Mono Jetronic is that BMW used it to control 2 injectors with a single injector signal. The method is commonly referred to as batch injection. It is sort of like wasted spark ignition, only for fuel. That's ok for spark control, but it leaves a lot to be desired from a fuel control point of view. |

As JJ said, there's a few devices, and they work together. The second one picks up where the first one leaves off, etc. The first one works on all the boxers. The second one has an 1100/1150 version, and a 1200 version. The 1200 version is part of the CANbus. |
