Scarham Creek Bridges

I had a trip planned for this weekend, but my tires didn't show up, and my oil change stuff is still inbound as well, so I thought I'd just knock around close to the house today, finish off the tires, and hopefully see some stuff I hadn't seen before. I live on Sand Mtn here in N. Alabama.....Sand Mtn really isn't a mtn., but more of a raised plateau, and it's about 15 miles across here where I live. There are several small creeks that begin and end on top of the mtn., and I had noticed that one in particular, Scarham Creek, had a lot of hwy crossings over its length. So, today I set out to ride over, and photograph all 17 of them.

Meager beginnings at CR312. A steel tile and a puddle under a dirt road.

#2 at CR302. A fairly new bridge. Probably a single lane wooden bridge until recently.

#3 at CR313. I love these old wooden bridges.

#4 at CR43. Just a small concrete culvert.

#5 at CR150. It's gone! I was kind of expecting this since the road leading in deteriorated into an overgrown 2-track soon after I turned onto it. The road is still on google maps and mapsource oddly enough.

#6 CR46. Large concrete culvert.

#7 ar CR20

#8 at hwy 227

#9 at CR28

#10 at CR104. Nothing special, but this one looked pretty new.

#11 at CR24. This one was neat. It's obviously pretty old since it still has stacked rock abutments at each end. It was very rusty too.

#12 at CR468

#13 at CR179

#14 at CR82

#15 at CR372. This one had pretty large sand deposits at each end. It looked like some kids had been playing under it.

#16 at hwy 75

#17 at CR409. This spot is called Double Bridges because CR409 crosses Scarham and Shoal Creeks in a curve with about 150 ft between the bridges. It's a pretty interesting spot. About a mile from here, Scarham deposits into Short Creek. After that it's about 1 mile and Short deposits into Guntersville Lake.

It was actually pretty warm when I did this. I've been around....didn't ride much this summer, but I've been out a fair amount in the last few weeks.

I don't. That whole little area right there is kinda spooky. I was just hoping I didn't get shot at while I was there taking those pictures

Nice work, Tim. The more I see of Alabama the more I think it's perfect and underrated for expedition riding.

Nice reminder of an area I worked in for many years. Spent close to 20 years doing or supervising water quality work in Scarham, Short, Town and South Sauty Creeks and have repeatedly visited most of those crossings.

Thanks
