Looks like my overheating issue is the thermostat, I'm going to make a bypass tomorrow and take it for a good thrashing to test it out. Anyone else remove their thermostat? I have a brand new set of Thermodydne radiators for a KTM 450 and it looks like they'll bolt right up to the 390 without much trouble. I'm starting to think I might give that a shot soon.

Secondary Air System

I've heard that some have taken off the Secondary Air System (SAS), and just blocked off the opening with a plug. What problem is this meant to solve? Does it make any difference to how the bike runs?

Be interesting to know if the Thermodyne's fit.

I did some measuring and it looks like a winner. I'm going to bypass the Thermostat housing tomorrow and beat it like a red headed step child on Sunday I'll bring the heat gun and see what kind of temps I'm getting.

Gutting the thermo was one of my many efforts to cool my 570. I can't give you any measured evidence to support the task but I know it didn't hurt it!

Hot Restart problem

Back to the "won't restart" problems. The same symptoms I was experiencing at high altitude in NM have resurfaced today. Bike runs fine, but engine won't restart when hot. Left me stranded solo deep in the hot Okie woods of No Man's Land this morning. It was a bummer, yes. But it did give me time to sort out this problem. As expected, she fired right up after about a 45 minute rest & cool down. Rode 40 miles back home and got the same problem to repeat.

Long story short, I've confirmed the fuel pump is bad. The impeller is expanding when it gets hot and apparently rubbing on the casing wall. It keeps spinning fine while moving, but once stopped (the engine shutoff) it locks up and can't get moving again upon restart attempt. The parts have to cool down enough too contract and free up.

How to diagnose: Remove the seat and put your ear near the airbox. Hit the Starter button and immediately release as soon as the motor turns over. In normal operation, the fuel pump will prime the system. You will hear it whirl for about 5 seconds. When the engine is real hot and my problem arises (engine won't restart).....there is no sound coming from the fuel pump upon tapping the Starter button. Nothing....Nada....dead. Wait 30 - 60 minutes and it whirls away and fires the bike right up.

Apparently, there are some fuel pumps in the Bergs that have too tight of a tolerance between the impeller and the side wall casing of the pump assembly. The two dealers I spoke with were aware of this problem as both had encountered it previously. My original dealer is replacing the fuel pump under warranty. I've owned my FE390 for 7 months, and have about 50 hours & 1,000 miles on it.

Sounds like others have been experiencing a similar problem to me......thinking LOST here. I'll bet its a bad fuel pump situation, same as mine.

Your first one made it longer than mine, my first one failed at 34 hrs. So my dealer pulled a black top pump out of a bike sitting on the floor to get me running, I was leaving for CO in a week and the replacement ones were on back order.

The second one failed after 24 hours at which time he replaced it with the new brown top version.

Both pumps experienced the same problems you described. I was even able to get both to fail while riding on a couple occasions.

Only have 4 hours on #3 and so far so good.

Add a CV4 blanket and wrap or thermal coat the header and I bet 90% of fuel pump problems will disappear. 240 hours on the original pump now- '11 570.

I've had the tank lined since the day I brought it home but no thermal coat on the header. I don't believe anything will stop a bad pump from failing. My buddy's '09 570 is totally stock with 200 hrs and still running fine on the original pump.

40hrs, 1100 miles on mine so far on my 2011 390, sat a lot over the Winter.

No problems with my OEM "black top" pump so far. It's been punished freezing cold and very hot -- long uphill technical single-trail climbs in the mountains behind very slow riders, fan running continuously for several hours. Never any boilover, but I have Reflecta-Gold tank underlining and ceramic coated header pipe so that likely helps a lot. Been a solid runner, never any starting issues so far.

I am cautiously optimistic that mine is finally fixed. It failed the 1st time @ 100 miles. Dealer didnt look @ it for 1 month, finally replaced fuel pump. It started to run like crap for awhile , then failed again@ 1200 miles. I now supposingly have the updated pump & it runs great. Still a little hard to start cold, but I will live w it. Total time in the shop TWENTY WEEKS. Some of this was incompetence & lack of trouble shooting ability. Some just plain old laziness. Husaberg did pay for most everything, so at least Im not out for the pumps. There was a throttle position sensor replaced, & also injector, plug , plugwire & end. In the interim I bought a 525, after it towed me out of the woods the 2nd time . Thanks Dentvet, On a positive note , IMHO this is without doubt thee fastest, best handling, safest feeling, confidence inspiring, D/S missile ever. Okay I feel better now, time to ride.

My smog stuff was removed by the dealer.. he stated he never let a 570 out the door w/o taking it off first.. so no it is not needed.. as for the fit of the tank I have no other help.. it was still on my list of "maybe" watching your install with interest.
