Steve McQueen Does Lake Burton
The emails started up a week or so ago. "Who wants to take off a day and go dualsport riding during Thanksgiving Week?" We decided to do the Lake Burton (Ga) area. Haven't been to that part of Ga. in a while. Several sons were coming home from college for the week and wanted to join us.
The Steve McQueen thing? Every ride is remembered by some set of events. This one will remembered by one of our group's Steve McQueen impression. He significantly overcooked a turn, on a twisty dirt road, in a steep sided valley and launched heartily into a field below, almost clearing the bobwire fence in the process. He found himself landing several feet into the field below after having executed an awkward 1 & 1/2 dismount and flight through the air. While in split second of rejoicing that he might be OK as he lay there on his back, he was greeted by a thud! as his WR450 which was trailing his descent, landed on top of him! Thankfully he was OK and rode off below to find the gate to the farmer's field. The group in the middle of the Oakey Mtn. ORV area: ![]() Michael P with a smile on his face (as always) ![]() We call this guy "KTM Man". We think he might hold the record for breaking stuff on the bikes or riders behind him. ![]() Leaving Oakey Mtn. ![]() Fathers and Sons: ![]() ![]() ![]() The FS Road headed to Tate (near NC) ![]() ![]() ![]() Big thanks to our ride leader "The Mayor". Great routes. Ride leader had a flat: ![]() John G helped him fix it. Looked like he has ISDE experience: ![]() Is that Steve McQueen on the right? Hat's off to the guy on the left - first ride with our group. Rode a Husky 610 with trials tires and luggage racks. Kept up through all the knarly stuff. I think he couldn't believe his eyes that Steve McQueen was still standing. ![]() Great climb up to top of a mountain with open views. Best not to follow this guy most of the time :) ![]() The Forest Service was doing a controlled burn in the area. These guys were flown in from Montana to supervise the burn. They were smokejumpers! Cool to talk to and nice folks. ![]() Pics at the top ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks to Cherokee Landing Resturant on Lake Burton for letting us park our trucks in your parking lot all day and great food and service after the ride. I give this place a high recommendation. ![]() Thanks for taking these pics John G! And for leading us on the ride Joe! Very thankful to be able to do this kind of adventure with good friends and family. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving! mikem9 screwed with this post 11-23-2010 at 10:04 AM |

I'm jealous. I used to ride up in that area a couple times a year when some buddies from Orlando would come up to their house on lake burton. Good times.

Hi Mike. What a nice group of dualsporters. I recognized a few of the faces, including Steve McQeen.... But I did not see our buddy Kirk L. in the pics...
Happy Thanksgiving to you, your wife, and son! SR

This was my first dual sport ride and it definitely will not be my last. Had a great time with the guys. We rode approximately 100 miles of all different types of trails. I took a few pics along the way to add to Johns photo album.
Looking forward to the next adventure. Michael P. Cool pics Michael P!
Found this site about the Missoula Smoke Jumpers we met up there. Tough dudes!: http://www.fs.fed.us/fire/people/smo...ula/index.html Sometimes the internet is incredible. Found these pics of one of the Smokejumpers up there. No wonder he was so friendly to our group of riders. He may even be on Advrider: ![]() ![]()
