Havana Gold

Is this an original color for a '78 RS? A few years ago I purchased a havana gold RS in South America, but it had been modified. The big fairing was gone. An S fairing was in its place. I ran the VIN through a couple of databases, and confirmed that it had indeed been born as a 1978 RS, which led me to assume that a previous owner had wrecked the original fairing and replaced it with the S fairing, then repainting it in havana gold. I subsequently obtained a fairly complete metallic gold RS fairing, and will be looking to get the whole thing painted in the not too distant future. Currently it looks kinda funky, with the tank, cowl, and fenders in havana gold, and the fairing a somewhat distressed metallic gold.

Everything I've read on these bikes has led me to believe that havana gold was not an original color for this bike, but this thread has caused me to think again. I think I like the metallic gold color better -- I like the C3PO look, but the havana gold has an appeal all its own. My strongest inclination is to restore it as closely as I can to the original factory color.

Can anyone enlighten me on this issue?

No. At least not in the US.

And I have slipped into calling my paint code 546 'Gold Metallic' 1978 RS by the wrong color name. I've done it before (it's easier making the same mistakes over again, eh?).

I have a original '78 US brochure, and it clearly identifies the two colors available that year for the RS as 'Gold Metallic' and 'Silver Metallic'.

The pinstripes (or ruling ink in BMW-speak) on the 'Gold Metallic' machines are brown!

The bike on the left is my last RS, an '83 with a hotted up '77ish spec motor, modded chassis and K100RS front end.
It worked really well.

RS's ROCK!!!
I'd love to make that but it's a hell of a ride from here.

Shipping my Airhead to the States in 2012 for a few weeks though

Great photo! Some interesting bikes there. I'd love to take a ride with this bunch! On a side note the K front end was used on later RS'.

Similar but not the same. K-bike had 41mm forks while the airhead used 38mm.

They looked the same, though.

Two guys on the right, Gary and George from PA. The rest of the bunch from Ontario. Pic taken in Wellsboro PA. Good people and a great area for riding.

However, get that RS ready !! Put a set of K75S bars on this winter, while you are doing the rings, pushrod tube seals, etc., and get ready for a "road run". I installed a set during the "rebuild" and it made a BIG difference in wrist fatigue & daily mileage :-). Have easily done 400 mile days with no problem, RS's love to RUN!!!!

I thought about the S bars but but I'd like to keep the dash pad...I have mild bar backs and I'm 6'2"" so its not so much a reach problem as an angle issue...I may try and have these bent straighter

I nose dove it to the floor last night in prep for the wallet lightening process to begin...

Rings etc
Rebuilld heads (unled valves)
pushrod seals...no more "oil rag" on the floor yay!
Clutch/rear main
Fork rebuild
New shocks
new windshield!

THAT one made me go hunting on eBay, & all I found was a white seat for an RS.

Maybe that was a blessing in disguise..
