you can have a basically new motor for around $1800. it can even be a 550 or 650 if you want for the same price. Upgraded parts to the 08 standard will be used and you have a bike that should be good for another 250 hours.
so you put $2200 in the bike and have a great ride that is as or more dependable and handels better than most out there.
seems like a lot of $$ until you think of buying a new bike at $8-10 k

Bob,

I understand what you are saying and I would love to have a FE650, but I am a cheap bastard as I also ride a KLR if you didn't notice.

I rode a 650 and it is a beast, big time!

$1800.00 for a rebuild of the 450, wow. What does that include? I have not put the numbers together, but I thought it would only take about 500.00 to replace the balancer shaft, new rings and gaskets.

i had Boss do the work and got new liner, pistonand rings, crank and bearings, balancer and bearings, cambearings and chainsprockets, head wear parts, small bearings clutch side ,etc. i have the bike from new and had 300+ hours on the bike. new bearings on wheels and swingarm steering head and chain and sprockets for just under $2200. close enough to new for me and i know the bike inside and out.

yo can make the bike a 450,550, or 650 or 390 or 501 with the rebuild for the same price
btw the 650 is a dog compared to the 550 and the 501 is probably the fastest thing corner to corner

i dont have a klr
i have other money pits also but do love the berg

bobzilla-

The 650 is a dog compared to the 550?! How is that even possible? My old '05 FE650 was the fastest dirt bike I have ever thrown a leg over! lol.

The 550 and 650 are close in HP,,but the 650 weighs more.

Well I have to say I've just about had it with my berg ,it runs great but I just can't figure out this electrical problem ... I've replaced the stator & cdi/coil &the bike starts right up on the button no problem but now the batteries will not charge while riding ,so if I ride it to work the batteries are completely dead .... I like the bike but it has been nothing but trouble for the past month ,so I'm just going to have to move on.

You know, even some brandnew batterys are no good, just wont hold charge.Do you have another bike to steal a battery from?
Or it could be as simple as a bad ground.

And,,the batterys you run in these bikes isnt really the biggest most powerful things either.
When my Berg,or shit my KTM's are warm they'll fire off the battery, noproblem. But most of the time on a cold bike, its button and kick lever at the same time.Unless i leave them on a charger all the time.
Shit my 18v drill has more ass then the AGM in my Berg.

I was meaning to replace that battery with one of the new Lithium ones. Figured it might actually make the electric starter useful!

For the original poster, do a full diagnostic on the electrical system. I'm not familiar with the older stuff, but the 04-08 bikes have a KTM-style "hybrid" electrical system with the DC and AC sides split. It could be as simple as a loose wire or a bad regulator.

Ah batterys are over rated. As long as i got a stone or stump to get a foot on,,i'm golden.

I don't have another bike I can use the battery from ,I have went over the wiring 100+ times ... before I go selling it I'm going to go ahead &try replacing the regulator & hope that's the problem ... anyone have an idea of what I might be able to sell it for?
Its a '01 fe650e with less then 90 hours

Get an ohmmeter and learn how to use it to check connections. That's a LOT easier than selling a bike.

i have a friend i ride with a lot and he has the 650. our bikes are set up the same, geared the same and the 550 will pull it out of the corners by a bike length or more every time. takes longet for the 650 to spin up. the 501 was even stronger and in my opinon the best motor of them all.
all bets are off on a real long soft hill climb the 650 has more grunt

i have ridden very well set up 70* bikes in all sizes and much prefer the older generation (04-08) bikes in all ways.

My blueprinted 94 501 was faster than the 00 FE650 I had for a few months, however suspension is obviously an improvement over the 1st Gen Bergs
