Scarysharkface Wanders BiBe..

I hauled the DR350 on the Jeep and took a couple of day rides over the week of Thanksgiving 2010.

I'll start with the first night in Terlingua. My first stop was at The Starlight Theater, where I happened to run into Roger..

He kindly offered me a spot for the night on his land just down the way a short bit..

Not certain, but I think this is Study Butte from his place. It might simply be Terlingua proper. I dunno.

I was rather crispy from the drive out already. I'd nailed a deer just outside of Luchenbach, after visiting a good friend in Austin and spending an hour or two at The Bass Emporium. A rest stop was my campsite after that, and with too-little sleep I drove the rest of the way. Tired is putting it mildly. Then add a Negra Modelo to the mix and before too long...

At some point I woke up enough to snap a couple more pics of the night desert..

I slept in the back of the Jeep with the windows down. Nice.

John

You met UNCLE, neat.
I met him in 07 or 06 at the first TAR in Junction,TX.

He has some very good rides in his area.
What did you think of his view of Mexico?

Neat pix & w/ humor.

For one who has great difficulty waking up in time to go to work every day and sleeps until 10 am on the weekends, I have an odd propensity to rise before the sun when I'm out and about alone..

I headed off to Kosmic Kathy's place for breakfast around the fire pit, then off in search of a friend's track out in the desert North of Terlingua..

I find it and get to the business of getting the bike unloaded and me geared-up for a ride..

Ready to go..

So I figure I'm a big boy now, so let's see what we can find..

Shortcut from Terlingua airport to Study Butte, complete with a water crossing downstream from the spring in Terlingua Creek..

Stopped at the Study Butte Store for some liquids..

Old Maverick Road in the park..

I love this road. There's plenty of variety but you could drive it in a Camry with some patience. Bike is better though.

Even some sand..

Too soon I'm back on pavement near Santa Elana Canyon, enroute to Castelon and lunch.. The road dips into washes..

The obligatory putting-on-the-gloves-after-a-snickers-lunch self-portrait..

Time to head for the River Road West..

John

Great stuff as usual John. I think it was your Thanksgiving trip last year that lit the Big Bend fire for me.

Looking forward to more!

Very nice pictures.

You might want to watch where you pass out in the future, I think Orion had a bead on you.

As is always, always the case, I should have taken more pictures of defining sections of the road.

Immediately upon turning onto River Road West there is a relatively wide sandy wash to cross. I should have stopped and taken a pic. As one exits the wash on the far end, there is a short hill to climb in deep sand. By the time I realized it was there I didn't think of anything other than staying on the throttle and getting up it. No pictures. I should have at least parked the bike at the top and walked back to snap a couple, but I did not.

Several sections appear to have been recently graded. Recently could have been last August, but still there is some deceptively easy riding interspersed among some more challenging stuff.

Much of the River Road West is fairly close to the border. Mountains in the background are in Mexico.

Note the depth of the tire track. I didn't slide to a stop, it's just that soft.

Plenty of this stuff..

Beautiful in all directions..

Lots more road ahead. I'm probably only a mile or two into a 58-mile stretch of primitive road at this point..

Lots of muted tones out here this time of year..

I'd just come down (up?) this. Good riding..

Absolutely a joy to spend time here..

It's always at least a little bit worse/better than it looks on-screen..

Thanks for the kind words everybody..

It's terrifically hard to take a bad pic in Big Bend, especially if there's a bike in the frame..
