I'm posting a full trip report (lots of stuff that's not directly motorcycle stuff and therefore not posted in this adv thread) over at Expedition Portal. Content in this thread is incorporated there, but it's mostly a Jeep vacation trip report with lots of photographs..

Great Job John!!! There are times that living is south Florida is a disadvantage, the drive/ride to get out of Florida makes trips to places like this difficult to pull off on a whim. But I am getting braver with adventures into the Everglades which have their own draw. Came up on about a 12' 'gator sunning himself along the road, that will make your heart race just a little bit!!

One of these days we will ride together!! Stay warm and safe my friend!!

199 days till departure for Alaska!!!

Andy

Sure we will!

I am confident I might wet myself if I happened upon a 12' alligator. I bet that was fun..

Alaska is going to be a great trip. Looking forward to the pictures and hearing about it.

You, my friend, are living the dream.

John

Here's the track from my River Road day, from the airport in Terlingua back to the airport in Terlingua. There is a waypoint for fuel at Rio Grande Village. Fuel is otherwise readily available at Study Butte, just West of the park..

I still can't get a .gpx file to upload to adv, so this will have to suffice...

Hey John when you did the trip, did you by chance check into the Texas Hill country/ Big Bend ride guide for dual sporters. I have been wanting to order one since I have plans to visit the park in 2011. I only live a few hours away from you, so if you decide to take another trip next year I would be happy to tag along in a separate vehicle with my bike.

Hope this helps you or some of the other guys wanting to make the trip.

I intended to order that before I went last year, but forgot. This year I had a pretty good idea where I wanted to go, so it didn't even occur to me to order it. Probably I should order it this year, because I'd like to explore a bit further afield from the park itself. This does not mean that I'll remember to do so.

I hope I can go back in 2011. I'd really like to drag my wife and family along, and take a few bikes, but can't guess if that will happen or not. Give me a holler when you think you're going and if I can break away I'd gladly do so. If I am able (i.e. it's not a last-minute snap-decision to go) I'll give you a heads-up if/when I'm going. But as my friends have pointed out numerous times, I usually deserve a big FAIL on planning. I'll try to be better..

Oh, and Jeep got a new deer deflector...

OK sounds good, now all you need is a big winch and you will have a true dual sport jeep.
Catch you later,
Dan

It's as though you're reading my mind....

It's of a '79 CJ-7 my little brother rolled some 29 years ago, and has been sitting in Dad's garage since then. I need to take it apart, check the seals and solenoids and get some synthetic line for it. Should be able to do that in the next few months, if not sooner..

Well I won't tell you what I was thinking when I first seen it. But when I saw the JEEP emblem my whole attitude changed about your decision. 8000# of kick ass JEEP winch. Should pull your bike out of a few mudholes and ravines.
