From Volta Redonda to Araruama and back (+/- 480km)

Last Sunday, my coworker Maryel had a motocross race in Araruama. The weather was great for a day's ride and I decided to go and check it out...

We left around 6.30 in the morning. Maryel was following me in his van and his girlfriend took some pictures. Ok, the pictures are not really top quality, since a lot of them have some kind of reflection from the windshield, but I think they can give you guys an idea of the scenery of this 240km (one way) ride...

It was all asphalt and nothing bad happened (flats, engine problems...) so it was just a perfect lazy Sunday ride...

On the way back I had a few drops of rain, but I was back home around 6.30pm... That night Rio de Janeiro was completely flooded due to heavy rainstorms.

Here is the route:

Early in the morning... The "rodovia dos metallurgucos" leading out of Volta Redonda.

On the BR116 or "Dutra" highway - named after a former Brazilian president.
This is one of the best highways in Brazil.

Start of the descent of the "Serra das Araras"

Lots of "curvas acentuadas" here - steep curves

there are some really nice views of the Serra.
It's sometimes hard to keep your eyes on the road.

The end of the 8km descent... Next: Rio de Janeiro!

This is near the international Airport of Rio de Janeiro (Galeão).
On weekdays this is one of the most chaotic traffic scenes in Rio.

The "linha Vermelha" (Red Line), which was recently fitted with brand new asphalt...
Rio is getting ready for the next world cup (2014) and the olympics (2016)

One of the stretches of the Linha vermelha crossing an area with lots of favelas...
Never fun to get stuck in a traffick jam in these areas.

Approaching the "ponte Rio - Niterói", a 13km long bridge over Guanabara Bay...

Rio de Janeiro port... The "ponte Rio - Niterói" dead ahead...
At the highest point, it's about 70m high.
You can stack 3 Maracana stadions underneath it...

On the bridge... Rio de Janeiro in the backdrop.
On good days you can see the Christ Statue (Corcovado) from here...

The end of the bridge...

Heading for the "Região dos Lagos" - Region of the lakes...

At the motocross track in Araruama...

Here's my friend and coworker Maryel in action on his Yamaha 250cc...
He won this race...

Ok, I guess this was my most boring report so far... All asphalt and stuff, nothing out of the ordinary, but I thought it was worth sharing, even if it is just for you guys to get a taste of how it is to ride on the Brazilian highways... Of course, this was a Sunday. Driving through Rio de Janeiro on a weekday is a whole different story. But for those who still think that all Brazilian roads are full of potholes... it's not like that.

Oh... right, something DID happen... I got sunburned

Cheers
Raf

Lástima que a viagem tenha se resumido a fotos por trás e no meio do trânsito !
Nenhuma paisagem bonita neste passeio ?

Fantastic roads!! Great ride..

Please keep the promotion of your touring site to the Vendors forum, and a link in your signature, not in your ride report, as this would be considered spam and this is a spam free site

Last picture is missing.....

Maryel's winning picture is missing. All I see is a black box. Good write up. You are motivating me to do one.

I would rather have a root canal without anesthesia then drive in Rio weekdays.....or any day. Yes I hate it that much.

Hey Mike,

The black box was actually a movie... Don't know what is wrong with it.
I'm going to check tomorrow. It's 3.45 in the morning. Want to go to bed

About Rio... The 2 times I came close to a really bad acident, both were in Rio on the Avenida Brazil. It can be pretty bad over there indeed, but I have to be there sometimes, you know... no other choice.

Grtz

Hey Rodrigo, how are you my friend...

You know, I ALWAYS put sunscreen... in my backpack... I just forget to apply it

Yeah, the dutra (BR116) and the BR101 are in pretty good shape... If you have to pass Rio de Janeiro, there are not a lot of options. You better stay on the big roads. Don't want to end up in any back streets here... On a motorcycle, the Linha Vermelha is a better choice than the Avenida Brasil, because there are no trucks allowed...

Also note that there are a lot of camera's on these highways, especially close to Rio City... and they do work... I found out the hard way

Cheers
Raf
