Highlands is my favorite mountain town in NC. It's everything Gatlinburg, TN would like to be...IMO. There are fun roads in the area, some of which will get you to The Dragon and The Cherohala Skyway.

Its hard to throw a dart at a map of Eastern TN and Western NC and not hit a good road...

Iron Horse Motocycle Resort is a good place to stay. It's close to Fontana, Cherahola, and the Dragon.

Wayah road from the Natahala Gorge back to Franklin to 28 down to Mountain Rest SC is some some of my favorite riding in Western NC. When you get to Mountain Rest, turn around and go back up 28 all the way back up to the Robbinsville. Awesome road!

NC 261 to TN 143 over Roan Mtn should also no be missed, since you're in the area.

I'd 2nd the Wayah Rd. Little traffic, beautiful scenery, and really tight stuff if that's your thing.

Right off the BRP

221 just south of Blowing Rock, NC is an amazing road and it parallels the parkway. When you are done you can finish the ride to the bottom of Grandfather mountain, or just jump back on the PW.
A few miles further South is 226. It is an exit off the PW through Little Switzerland. The curves on this road are extremely banked and a lot of fun. 276 to Brevard. All amazing roads! If you have any questions, just ask. I can give specifics about a lot in NW Carolina area.

That's the issue I'm having.....so many roads.....so little time!! It's almost overwhelming as I look over my atlases.

Passing WV & eastern KY to go to the "Dragon", is unexplainable reasoning to me.

I got no advice.

While I love Wayah road, it wouldn't be much fun on a big street bike. I went through a few months ago on a VTR, and the gravel in the corners and rain grooves can really screw you up. Save that road for a dual sport ride.

I'm looking at my map here and noticed Little River Road and Laurel Creek Rd inside the Smoky Mountain Park. Now they look great on the map with all their twisties, but are they normally packed with cars or LEO? If I can't have a "spirited" ride, then I'd rather avoid them. Any other roads inside I should hit? So far, I plan on seeing the Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome.

You will not get a "spirited" ride anywhere in Smoky Mountain Park unless you do it late at night after all the tourists have gone back to their hotels, but watch out for the critters. If you want a "spirited" ride follow the advice that many here have given. I have ridden every road mentioned here (most numerous times), and believe me, they have not steered you wrong.

True about the Smokies. You are guaranteed to get behind a line of cars 10 deep and ther person in front has never been there so they're going 30 mph......for an hour and a half
