Question Airhead fork tube differences?

O.K., I've been lurking long enough- now it's time to take advantage of all you airhead gurus out there...

I'm modifying a '78 BMW R100S to use Brembo brake calipers on the front. So far, I have the fork sliders and internal suspension parts from an '84 RT, but I still need fork tubes. I was looking around the RealOEM and Max BMW parts sites and, of course, the fork tubes from my '78 have different part numbers than those for an '84.

The fork tubes for both the '78 and '84 models are 36mm diameter and 614mm long. Anyone know what the difference in the tubes are? Internal machining differences perhaps?

I'm new to airheads, but I've been doing a lot of reading. As it happens this came up on the airheads list just a week or so ago. The bolt that holds the damping rod (I believe the newer ones are larger) to the bottom of the slider is different between the two models. Others have successfully modified the later sliders to accept earlier tubes like you have, but it requires machining.

The damping assembly inside those tubes is different. Some claim the earlier style are superior.
