RIP Tony Kirby

Just saw this on another forum:

Quote:
Tony Kirby passed away last night after a hard fight with motor neuron disease.

TK, one time editor of Australasian Dirt Bike and the founder of SideTrack Magazine, had a great following within all spheres of the motorcycle industry. His honesty about various makes and models could get him into hot water or make the bike a huge success. The industry support was universal; from Yamaha's support of the Across Australia Record in 1998 using the new and untested WR400 to Suzuki's support in a number of Australian Safaris including a class win on a DR250.

Despite being a Kiwi, his knowledge of Australia and the australian bush was almost unique. There would not be a half decent fire trail, interesting single track or back road throughout Australia he hasn't travelled, writtern about or photographed. It could also be argued that he brought trail or adventure riding out of the small time and into a thriving sport. He was instrumental in the formation of the Dual Sport Motorcycle Riding Association (DSMRA), who's aims are to keep riding areas open and to bring like minded riders together.

If you travelled, rode or talked with TK you always received a smile and a dose of his notorious but unique laugh.

I now count every moment I spent with him as lesson on how to live life to the max, just as he did.

His passing was in Newstead near Castemaine in country Victoria. Funeral arrangements have not been made as yet but I will let you know when and where.

Head into the sunset TK and God speed.

Peter Barber
RIP Adventure riding legend.

A sad loss

First GE quite a while back and now TK , These blokes knew how put magazines together , Make you feel like you were mates with them just through reading thier work and above all allways had honesty and integrety.
I got a lot of enjoyment from the early days of ADB with GE at the helm and later TK , and remember buying the first issue of Sidetrack with TK running the show, which i think turned into the best dirt bike mag in the world
Best wishes to all who were close to TK , I think he has a lot of mates he never met !

Damn bloody damn.

Not the news you want to hear right now.

Tony was inspirational.

He created in my opinion, the best Australian motorcycle magazine produced, he wrote about Adventure riding long before it had been tagged as such.

He inspired me to build my own K75GS after he published an article in one of his early editions, an article called "Good roadies gone bad".

Condolances to his family.

If anyone can put up his furneral arrangements, I would appreciate it as I return from OS next Monday

Chris

He will be sadly missed by all us trailriders in the Mildura area.
He spent a fair bit of time here over the years and most of the members of the Mildura Motorcyle Club had the pleasure of having a beer or 3 with him either at the club's bar or in one of the many Mallee pubs on a trail ride.

Keep riding the big XR wherever you are...

RIP TK.

Dont criticize someone till you have walked a mile in their shoes,
at least then if they get angry they will be a mile away - and barefoot.
