Yep seen that already.
I've actually heard that the seats on the XT1200's are "shit as shite".

Its probably got the best stock seat(s) we've experienced, and I just collected some custom sheepskin covers from our local upholsterer yesterday for a fraction more height and comfort. Its very good standard, exellent ergos, but as ever, YMMV

I reckon your next bike should be a VMXer. Maico!

FE650 Berg and South Coast single track this weekend. I'm over vintage 2 strokes, as entertaining as they can be. Had an IT490 before my FE501 for giggles at the time.

It was EXCELLENT, perhaps my best ride ever. Perfect weather every day, with just a 1/2 hr storm up north one morning. Lots of great riding was the result of either following locals, or spending some time with Aus Topo v4 in BaseCamp and uploading it all on to my Montana. We were only snookered a couple of times.

So just over 9,000 kms with one maintenance day in the middle and 68,600 kms travelled all up so far for the DR650:

Overall, the DR was essentially trouble free, as expected I guess. Anyway, some stuff that may be of interest:

Speedo Drive
The speedo drive failed, again. This was the second one, a second hand one from the wreckers that outlasted the original, 29 k kms vs 32 k kms. Same failure mode, with play developing in the end of pinion gear and ends up stripping the teeth. I ordered a new one in Dalby when we first arrived, and it was there upon our return a few days later. In the meantime, the GPS kept track of the kms.

Fuel Consumption
I had hoped to get an accurate comparison with one of the other DRs on the trip that is totally stock, but he had some carby issues which we eventually sorted with some new O rings and a float needle enroute. However, with the NCVT in the FCR and GSXR can its close enough to stock consumption for me, maybe 1-3% worse, maybe. So no penalty for the FCR etc, and lots of benefit.

Side Stand Switch
The same DR with the carb hiccup had the side stand switch go on the blink early on Day 1. We'd been telling him to get rid of it for a while. Sorted now.

Spokes
In my pre trip prep I replaced 3 broken spokes in the front wheel. I'd had a good ride on some rocky terrain previously, so that might have contributed. I had another break in the rear wheel on Day 4 which I replaced that night. And I just replaced another in the front wheel this afternoon.

These are heavy gauge stainless spokes supplied by JTR to suit the Excel Red rims fitted. They have all failed when the end that's peened over in the hub disappears. It seems the stainless is too brittle for this application, but I'll live with them for a while longer. I still have some spares to use up.

Linkage Bearing

I'd serviced the linkage and swingarm bearings when I was disabled at the end of last year and all was good. At the service day when swapping rear tyres, I noted some play had developed in the bearing at the front of the link on the frame. I had an All Balls kit available in the spares kit, so just changed that bearing, which was the original. I've noted this afternoon that the dogbone bearings on the link now have some play, so I'll swap them all out soon. Still, I can't be unhappy with the service life of the originals considering the use. No corrosion, just wear.

Cush Bearing
I put a fresh eBay double row in, along with chain and sprockets and wheel bearings before departure and checked it for play at the end of each day when lubing the chain. All good, but I noted this afternoon some play developing, so swapped that out for my last eBay bearing today.

The next one will be the new bearing spec that I'll have to machine up a new spacer and seal retainer for. Maybe that'll last longer.

Oil Consumption
I did more kms to the service day than expected and lost track a bit with the speedo drive failure, so did 5,700 kms between oil changes. I normally do them between 3 and 4 k kms. It did burn a bit and needed a top up, maybe 500 ml. Also the gear change was getting notchy, so definitely too long. The next change on the road was at 3,200 kms and no top up in between. Still using Delo 400, and no reason to use anything else.

FE650 Sticker
This got a few going, especially because the bash plate somewhat disguises the DR lines. Best though was a dealer salesman who didn't sell Suzukis, who was so concerned/interested that this was the 2014 model prototype that he dragged the boss and a couple of others over to check it out. It would be his best selling model, if he could sell them, he reckoned. I'd previously explained that I was doing the final shakedown for Suzuki, and that the WP Ohlins would be KYB or Showa, and the tank wouldn't be Safai, but similar size etc etc

VSM
A DR battery was $40 more expensive at VSM than the identical SSB one at the KTM/Yam dealer next door. Similarly, a 606 fitted was $50 more expensive at VSM on the day. Ouch.

XTZ660
The XTZ660 that accompanied me for most of the kms that I did will likely be sold. Too heavy and doesn't handle as well as a well set up DR, let alone mine. Bit more power, but the DR ticks all the other boxes. And this one had some FI mapping changes, Ohlins up back, and Teknic kitted forks that was all fiddled with along the way for some improvement, but.....

Tyres
I headed off with my preferred Scorpion Rally up front, expecting it to last the trip, but it wore more than I expected, so I finished up with a Sava MC23 which works much like an MT21. Looks similar too.

I also left with a Motoz Desert HT up back and it lasted 5,000 kms, lasting longer than I expected. I swapped it for a Mefo Stonemaster which lasted one 500 km day, it was diabolical, like riding on wet greasy clay all day no matter what the pressure or surface. Swapped for a 606 that still has a bit more left currently at 3,500 kms.

All up, the DR is humming and I and my mates had a most excellent adventure. Roll on the next one. In the meantime, the DR and I go to the coast tomorrow, and then I have to get the Tenere fully sorted. And in between there are a few domestics to do too. Ah well, can't ride or play with bikes every day I suppose

Great report! Thanks for the detailed up date. Hope the knee is working well! One Hell of a Ride! Sounds like your DR did well ... and no blown 3rd gear!

Regards spokes/rims ... you are not running stock DID wheels? True?
Excel? Hmmm? Any thoughts on that? I know the DID wheels are heavy ... but I find them very strong.

I've not had a spoke loosen or a bearing go bad. Just lucky I guess. I have two sets of wheels. No problems with them so far ....

I like Delo too ... I add a bit to my Mobil One Synthetic. Seems generally accepted that Synthetic oil provides better wear protection during high stress, high heat conditions. This especially true on what is essentially an Air Cooled motor. No oil use on my DR650 at 53,000 miles. Mobil One car oil/filter changes every 3500 miles.

Good luck on the next trip! Got pics?

As noted earlier in this thread, both stock rims cracked. I swapped the rear to an 18", and both are Excel Reds with stock hubs reamed out for the heavier spokes.

I don't have pics, but others do and they will no doubt surface in due course

Looks like an awesome ride. Dawn and I talked about going to Aus for the TK ride as we rode with him on the 98 Yamaha Imperative ride. But bike problems and other things meant that didn't happen.
I reckon we should have though !
