Moving to SC. What trips to plan?

Currently in Okinawa Japan finishing up my 3rd year and I'll be moving over to South Carolina for the next 3 years or so in a few months. I've been lurking for awhile on this site and plan on doing my share of American adventures once I finally get stateside again (Been outside CONUS for 7+ years)

Where are some good 2-3 day trips to plan in that area? I've currently got a Harley XL1200R that I ride all over this island. I'll be picking up a dual sport bike when I get stateside and plan on doing some on/off road trips. Thanks for any ideas.

I'm originally from Upstate NY and can't wait to do some trips up in the Catskills in the future as well.

Where in SC will you be?

Coastal areas are beautiful, but the roads are generally boring. There are awesome roads and scenery in the north-west corner of the state, as well as western NC, north-eastern GA, and adjacent areas of TN.

Check the threads for the SC tag-o-rama games (there are state, lowcountry, midlands, and upstate games) for some ideas of what to see. We also have a monthly dinner meets in Charleston and Columbia.

The Mountains of Western North Carolina

Lived in Okinawa when I was a little kid. Dad was stationed at Naha. Welcome back in advance.

Be sure to ride the mountains of western NC, especially in the summer when it's too hot to ride in SC. This is easily the best riding area in the world. Particularly, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Cherohala Parkway, and the infamous Tail of the Dragon, but there are plenty more great roads to ride.

+1 on the northwest corner where GA/SC/NC meet. There are some great roads and compared to parts of TN/NC and parts of north GA less traffic.
Just check out google maps in the area and look for the squigly roads.

Just Bounce Between SC11 and NC 64

Depending on where you are coming from in SC, hit SC11 on either end from Wahalla to Cleveland and bounce back and forth from there to US 64 in NC. Tons of great roads. 276 (& East Fork Rd), 215, 281/130, 107, 28, and 64 itself from Highlands to Franklin. And most of those are great on up past 64 as well, but you can tie them all together several ways.

Maybe the best day of riding in my life.

There is some great riding in the Smokies. Here's a couple of my ride reports from NC:

What kind of riding do you like? There are some nice curves in the NW corner of the state, and that puts you on the edge of some of the best road riding in the country. There's good dual-sporting here, too.

There's a dinner in the Greenville area every two weeks (though we've had a pretty spotty record lately).

When do you get here?

Chris

Thanks for the quick responses

I'll be at the Beufort/Paris Island area but I'll be trying to get away as often as I can! Looking like April I'll be getting out there.

Thanks for the ideas so far. I've grown tired of riding on small islands and it will be nice to have state lines to cross again... I enjoy a good ride through some twisties and I've been fortunate for the ones here in Japan. I'm really looking forward to getting off the main roads though and doing some trails and off road trips.

Thanks again. Hope to see y'all on the right side of the road sometime in the near future.
