Question GPS recommended for trail-riding and F800GS

I know there are lots of threads already out there. But after reading I can't find my answer.

I am looking for the GPS unit that is recommended for trail-riding in the USA. Would like 3D view if possible as I live in the mountains. Durability, inexpensive, etc...

Am I right in thinking the 60CSx is the way to go?

I appreciate your subjective feedback...

I have been running the same 60 CSx for over 5 years. Hard to beat if you ask me.
Price is right as well.

The 60CSx is a good unit but doesn't do 3D like the Oregons do. I have a 60CSx and an Oregon 450t and I prefer the 60CSx but that may just be because I'm set I'm my ways and have used it much longer than the 450t.

There's a replacement for the 60 that does 3d now and I think it's the 62. I think it's on the shelf now. Was released not that long ago.

I'm running the Oregon and am quite pleased with it. I'm quite surprised how okay I am with the touch screen.

I have tried several GPS models, but went back to the 60CSX. It can take a beating, always finds a signal, and has all the options I need. Had some issues with other mounts, but the Touratech mount solved the vibration issues and the GPS has never come off the bike.

Thanks for all the feedback. Guess I should have bought the 60 Csx when I saw it in the Amazon Gold Box...

I have the76CSx and like it a lot. When I bought this one it was a toss up between the 60 and the 76. I went with the 76 due to button size and placement.

Vote 1 for 60CSX

I've had the 60CSX for close on 5 years now and have never had an issue. It handles very tough trails and conditions without issue. I have it mounted via the Garmin handlebar mount which is much better than the Ram mount. The Ram mount had let go several times over semi rough terrain (luckily it was tethered via the wrist strap)

The 60CSX lets you know where you are and where you need to go which is what you need.

I'd buy another one, but my 60CSX refuses to give up.

I will stick with my Delorme PN40.
Not sure what 3D mode is, but I can ride with 3D satellite photos if I want.

276C Garmin. Bike, car, kayak and canoe the thing rocks. Not touch screen so you can feel the buttons and use it without constantly looking at the screen. Tough as nails. Crashes, salt water even the vibes from a KTM single haven't killed it. I think the thing is 6 or 7 years old. I have a newer Garmin touch screen for the car and still prefer the 276 except that the new one has a keyboard on screen that makes entering names faster.

+1 I love my 276C! The larger screen also makes it easy to read when you glance down quickly while standing on the pegs hauling ass through fire roads!

I haven't researched the features of the other models mentioned by the 276C has a lot of tracking options which I like because I want to share my tracks!

Add me to the 276C camp. I've been (ab)using mine for 8 years now and it just keeps on ticking. I've never come across a road of any kind that wasn't in its database, even out in Bumfuck, Nevada. In fact, it often shows (and tries to steer me down) roads that aren't even visible to the human eye anymore.

But I'd recommend it over anything I've ever seen on the market.

spot mount

Hey Woodworks, like the SPOT mount. any info on what and where.
I'm using a Garmen ETREX XC for hiking and my bike gps. Been good so far. I got a smart phone for Christmas and love the Google Maps, you can look at the satellite view and see any possible roads.

Sure, I don't have any pix of the mount alone, but I used this bracket from Touratech (mounted backwards):

and then clamped on a a spare piece of 2" aluminum plate I had lying around. Some sticky-back velcro on the plate and the Spot, a velcro strap, and Bob was my uncle. It's been a secure mount for more than 20,000 miles now over all sorts of terrain.

And yes, I do realize that some people prefer to have the Spot on their person at all times. But I have given this plenty of thought, and I prefer to mount it there so that the tracking function works reliably. I figure that even if I become incapacitated in a bad crash, S&R will be able to locate me via my last-known tracking position. If I had it on my person, I may not always be certain of physically being able to hit the 911 button.
