I'm curious about this. I've always bought plated bikes so a title was a given, but I'm in the market for a dirt bike for my son now. For a non-plated bike do folks expect a title, hand written bill of sale, or neither? I'm in Indiana if it matters.

It should still have a title that states something like "not for highway use".

I can't believe this guy (the CL AD guy) bought a bike not even a year ago and lost the title already? Wow.

Non-plated bikes come new with an MSO. From that, my state's DMV will issue a title of ownership, without the owner having to register the bike or plating it. The title now identifies the new owner of the bike.

Years ago I bought a used XR500 from a dealer, and only got a bill of sale. I tracked down the original owner and got the MSO, so it ended up okay, but I make a mental note never to have that occur again.

Without an MSO or title, and with only a bill of sale, I'd be buying air. There'd be no proof that I was the owner.

In Kansas if you title a bike you have to pay registration fees and yearly personal property tax. Therefore, many, including myself, never register or title an off road motorcyle. Never been a problem selling a dirt bike with bill of sale only. If the new owner were to register the bike, he would also have to pay sales tax.
