A One Day little Adventure on Jatiluhur reservoir Indonesia

Jatiluhur located in District Jatiluhur, Purwakarta Regency ( 110 km from Jakarta). Jatiluhur Dam is the largest dam in Indonesia. The dam was named by the government Reservoir Ir. H. Juanda, with panoramic lake which covers about 8300 ha. The dam was built since 1957 by a French contractor, with the potential of the available water of 12.9 billion m3 / year and is the first multipurpose dam in Indonesia.

On September 2010, a few days after national holidays, there were two riders twist their throttle ahead to Jatiluhur reservoirs.

They took a back road from Jakarta via Jonggol-Cariu-KutaManeuh and Jatiluhur.

This is the first scene just after Cariu, a rice fields with stunning background hills.

The farmer greeted us and was willing to be photographed, so he posed like this.

And these are our two humble iron horses

I tried to hoe the fields, but it's really a tough job. Especially with these riding gear in hot weather.

Satisfied enough to chat with farmers, we continue the journey. Not too long ride, we found a shallow river that is interesting enough to play water.

The "motographer' crossed the river first....

... and this is my turn

A bad idea...

We then continued our journey to reach the reservoir before dusk, not too far away, a stunning magnificent scenery halted us once again and make us to grab our camera out of our pocket. Here are the captures.

A corn field with stunning view of hills on the background.

A little happy farmer family enjoy their lunch in the shades

We just realize that it's time for lunch, so we continued our ride to find a food stall.

And these are our humble lunch, a typical Indonesian food.

After lunch, we rested for a moment while chatting with visitors of food stalls. We asked if we take the right path to get to the reservoir Jatiluhur. They say we're in the right direction and can reach the reservoir Jatiluhur in short time. So then we pursued our ride.

Just a few miles of food stalls but we were hampered by a traffic jam. What? A traffic jam? In a village in the interior of a district? Apparently there was a circumcision procession that took part or most of the road. A unique procession and complicated for a piece of skin crackers.

This is "The King of the Day". He will lose a part of his genital tomorrow, so he deserve of a pampering. The tradition of circumcision in Sundanese society made one day before the day they circumcise a child. The day before the circumcision, the boys will be paraded around the village like a little king. The child bride also called circumcision paraded on a small litter that has been decorated in such a way. Who paraded usually family members, relatives and neighbors.

This circumcision wedding entourage around the village accompanied by the lively arts of Sunda. Some use art "tanjidor", the orchestra of the traditional Betawi tribe using wind instruments, strings, and percussion. There is also a lively arts paraded with "Sisingaan", a lion like statue or doll. It comes from Indonesian word for lion, "Singa".

"Sisingaan" is the use of Sundanese art stretcher lion-shaped head and body. In a circumcision party or festival that uses "Sisingaan", the boy who would be circumcised is paraded on the stretcher of "Sisingaan". The festival or party is intended for the child to feel happy and not afraid to circumcision.

But apparently, the kid chose the eagle stretcher rather the lion.

Then who riding those "Sisingaan"? They may be brothers or cousins of the kid. They simply accompany the kid to feel comfortable.

In remote villages like this could hold traditional procession like this will be considered as rich persons. Most villagers are poor. Their occupations are just farm laborers who do not have fields. Walled house only a few, the rest of the houses are made of bamboo or semi-permanent buildings.

The house band, a portable house band.

I mean a portable band, literally.

And so does the sound system.

As the parade move on, we took several photos.

I do not know how many rupiahs ( the Indonesian currency) they are paid to do this job, but one thing for sure is this job is not easy. Dancing with the stretched "Sisingaan" and the kids on their shoulder and walking down the steep road.

Leaving the parade behind, we continued our ride and suffered damaged roads. There used to be a paved road but now we only see potholes everywhere and tarmac road. There were also gaping big puddle in the middle of the road. My friend immediately slowed down his bike and carefully choose a better path among the damaged road.

But I didn't. I ride at medium speed, through the holes and damaged roads, from tarmac, macadams and dirt. And the result is my stamina drop-off drastically, in the hot weather and sunny I rode with a endurance gear that purposed for long-distance ride, not an off-on road short distance like this.

After several kilos we saw a small like, we thought it was part of Jatiluhur reservoir, but it's not. People call it Kuta Maneuh Dam. A much smaller dam compare to Jatiluhur reservoir. We decided to take a rest here.

Exhausted and dehydrated.

This little dam looks a bit peaceful, serene and beautiful.

As the day is growing old, we packed our belongings and ride again to reach Jatiluhur reservoir. We had only few times now before dusk.

Finally we get there just before dusk. We still have enough time to play and take some photos.
