Lowered Silencer on a Piaggio

I am fitting big side racks for panniers to my 2006 BV 250 and it has the stock silencer set-up. what I am asking is if anyone has experience redirecting the pipe? If I could have the pipe shoot back level rather than angling up the 20 degrees like it is now my cases will fit nice - otherwise I have to widen them 3 inches both sides as the panniers hang down 5 inches over the top of the muffler where it is now.

Could I just cut the pipe, bend it down, reweld the pipe, and make a new support bracket? Anyone see a problem with this idea?

Thanks

Sure, that would be a minor project. Just make sure you weld the pipe good and have no leaks. I would personally try and avoid it, but I don't really see a reason why not.
