F650 single. Rear tail lamp has a temper.

Took the bike out yesterday & my rear running light was out, AGAIN. the brake filament works fine. This seems to happen to me way too often. I always do a pre ride inspection, and it has given me a complex while im riding. Its the same fix every time.....unscrew the plastic cover, twist the bulb left & right, and it works. Ive done eveything that I can think of. New bulbs & bent in the connector tab for a more solid connection.

Is this a common thing for f650's. It was really humid last week, and the bike was in the garage for over a week. think its the moisture building & creating a bad contact? should i try conductivity cleaner stuff? should I buy a whole new unit?

Yes - common - easy fix

I assume you mean the original carburetored F650?
If so then, yes, it is common.

The problem is that the tail light assembly bounces around too much and the bulbs just fail. It is an easy fix. Pull the assembly down and modify the rubber mounts so there is less shaking. You may actually find one of the mounts broken.

Once the assembly is firmed up a bit the bulbs will last longer.

Or.. you could convert to LEDs.

i have a FI F650 (2005). Ive read about that a lot on f650.com, but i thought the bouncing around just led to the unit eventually falling off.

Vibrations are one cause of filament death (along with moisture getting onto the connection, and some other things that can kill them). Dampening the vibrations, doing away with a filament (LED), or trying to seal up the tail light (and connections) from outside air that can be the vehicle for moisture to travel into critical areas.

I am not sure if it will work with the F-sixfiddy, but you should look online and buy a direct plug in led bulb:

Also, get familiar with "the chain gang" if you have not already done so:

Go with LED, you can pick one up on ebay pretty cheap. They're more reliable and brighter. I think it's the same light as the 1150 or 1100 GS.

Is it a simple plug & play swap out, or do I need to rework some wiring?
