What are the camping details? At someone's house?

Also, is anyone interested in doing more of an off road trail ride? I'm more of a dirt guy.

New River Gorge Bridge

For many years The World's Longest Single Arch Steel Span Bridge

Actually it is now the third largest arch bridge in the world.
Since the bypass bridge at Hoover Dam opened it is the second highest bridge.

It crosses the New River at 876 feet above the water.

There is an overlook just North of the Bridge on the east side near the visitors center.

Every third Saturday in October the bridge is closed to traffic.
About 250,000 spectators come to watch rappellers and parachtists.
The only day that jumping off the bridge is permitted.

If you are brave you can admire the New River Gorge from a catwalk below the road surface.

Catwalk tours leave from the Canyon Rim Visitors Center.
You need to call for tour times. Phone 304-574-1037.
You will be hooked to a harness system so the wind can't blow you off the walk.

The sound of the trafiic above can't be ignored. Ear plugs?
Here is the not so good news: Cost about $70.00 per person.
The bridge was completed on October 22, 1977.
It took a little more than 3 years to build.

Do check pnoman ride report. He rode down into the gorge.

New River Gorge Coordinates:
38.067893,-81.082191
Route from the Marlinton Motor Inn:
http://tinyurl.com/328ez2g

If you zoom in on the destination in Google Maps you will notice that
you are guided to the bottom of the river gorge via County Rt 82.
Access may be different at the present time but at least you are aware of the layout.

Railroad tracks on both sides of the river. Coal requires railroads.
A print-out is recommended.

Arctic Tundra in West Virginia?

Visit the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area

Cranberry Glades Botanical Area

Administered by the National Forest Service, Cranberry Glades comprises about 750 acres of acidic bogs left over from the Glacial period.
The acidic soil and acid-loving-vegetation in the bog created an ecosystem of unique and rare plant species.
It is extremely fragile.
A careless hiker who steps on the vegetation may kill it forever.
The Forest Service has built a wheelchair accessible boardwalk over a part of the bog.
You can take a short hike and see the beauty and flora of the place.
It consists of plants that dotted North America 20,000 years ago.
Among these are two unusual species of carnivorous plants that thrive in the area —
the purple pitcher plant

(It seems to have caught something)

and the

native sundew.

They evolved carnivorous habits because of the scarcity of root nutrients in the spongy soil.
The view of the remains of a 20,000 year old forest is an unforgettable experience.

Seneca Rocks

SENECA ROCKS

From Rt 28 Seneca Rocks is a majestic sight from street level.

Purchased by the federal government in 1969, it is one of the best-known landmarks in West Virginia.

Photos June 2010.

The formation rises almost 900 feet above the confluence
of Seneca Creek with the North Fork South Branch of the Potomac River.

There is evidence that several Indian tribes inhabited the area
including the Algonquin, Tuscarora and Seneca.

The first European settlers began to arrive around the mid 1700s.

Seneca Rocks is also popular with rock climbers.
The Rocks served as a training ground for cliff-scaling soldiers in World War II.

Constant breezes made possible by the venturi effect of the narrow valley drive away bugs.
No mosquito bites when casting your bait in the river.
Wild life is plentiful

The Seneca Rocks Discovery Center is located at the base.
It has an outstanding view of the vertical wall.
Links:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/ssrs/story?id=4591

http://tinyurl.com/2d7fy2n

Within walking distance, of the Discovery Center, is the Sites Homestead.
Tours of the home are available on Saturdays, during the summer season.
Weekdays by special request at the information desk.
Tour the grounds of the Homestead and heirloom gardens at any time during the regular day-use hours.

You can also view Seneca Rocks on horseback:
http://www.yokums-stables.com/
Cost is $35 per person.

After visiting Seneca Rocks proceed north on Rt 28 to

Smoke Hole Caverns.

Silde Show
http://www.smokehole.com/caverns.html

A lot less expensive than The Lost Caverns in Lewisburg, WV.

http://www.smokehole.com/cavernsrates.html
$13.00 for adults.

The Smoke Hole is adjacent to the entrance of Smoke Hole Caverns and comes
complete with "West Virginia's Largest Souvenir and Gift Shop".
A tour of the caverns offers an insiders view of a moonshine still.
Enterprising bootleggers used to take full advantage of the geography of the area.
Many stills were hidden among the caverns.

Note:
Smoke Hole Caverns and Log Cabins is a neat looking place.
South of the Main Entrance is a small village of log cabins.
Lots of green space out back for tenting.
I wonder if a motorcycle rally was ever held there.

I am assuming that the camping is on the premises just for this weekend.
Bring deodorant as you can't take a shower unless you have a buddy who has a room and will share his/her shower/bath.
Much like Galeton, PA last year where some camped on the green between the highway and the motel.

Lots of room on the property.

Camping will be on the hotel property.

This is not something that they usually offer but... they will for us this weekend only.

Details are: Twenty per night to throw down some silk.
No showers so buddy up to someone with a room for your shower and tooth brushing needs.

I will have two Porta homes delivered for elimination functions.

Yes there are plenty of better camping areas in the immediate area but close to the collective for bullshit and beer seems to be the preferred option.

Rooms are only 63.95 for a double or 53.95 for a single + WVa tax

I like to camp myself, (Holly River SP is were I would go) but I think a room is in my future

If you are unable to locate dirt in West Virginia you may need more help than I can provide
