Here is a 1984 XR500

Hard to find in this condition, but a little overpriced even for New Zealand.

Another 81 just came up on craigs in Denver:

Little pricey, but looks mostly unmolested.

Anyone have a White Brothers reed block replacement plate thingy laying around you'd care to sell me?
Gonna give it a shot at installing a Mikuni 36mm flatslide pumper on the old girl and the stock reed assembly kinda defeats the purpose of the pumper part.

EEEKKKKK! Its the killer bike. I had a 83 model, and that bike tried to kill me a hundred times in the 2 months I had it. I was riding a Suzuki RL 250 trials bike and a YZ 125. Decided I wanted a little more range and bought this demon posessed bike. My first 4 stroke so it continually tried to break my leg while starting it, or trying to break my leg if it fell over on me, which happened several times causing me really get pissed cus then you really had to kick it 50 times to get it started. God I hated that bike, traded it in on an 84 CR 250 and never looked back.

Not knocking the bike, it just wasn't for me. Seeing this thread brings back a lot of bad memories, I may have to go out and buy another 2 stroke to ease the nightmares.

Well, just like any big bore thumper back then, you needed to follow the starting drill. You couldn't just stab at the kickstarter like a two-stroke.

If your bike was an '83, it was a completely different design than the '79-'82 500s. Yours was the first year of the RFVC engine with dual carburetors. They made quite a bit more power but were kinda finicky to start compared to the earlier bikes.
My '81, and the '82 I bought new back then, were, and are one of the easiest starting thumpers I've ever owned. I've had the things light off while I was slowly kicking them through just to find the compression stroke when warm!

Can't help you with the WB reed block replacement plate Bruce. Good luck finding one Perhaps you can make one?

But I'm happy to report that my 84 XR500R started with one kick this morning. I've been leaning out my factory jets and things are working better at my altitude.

My bike this morning:

there's a soft spot in my heart...

Good to see you found what you were looking for, and sounds like things went well...
I finaly sold for 400 bucks to a buddy with in my old crowd who rides with us. I can/will buy/get back some day, as I have 1st dibs.

There's a special feel to the 81/82 ride. It's neat to climb a steep grade in the woods. The geometry isn't like the 600's. The rear subframe is strong.

The brakes stop you, but sometimes not when you wanted to "stop like that".

If I may wax nostolgicly (some past pics) in your thread Bruce...
My XR was too far away for you. Best thing for me, it's right here in town still. To this day, she starts right up, does not smoke, has never been disassembled and is very trustworthy. (she does need work though)
Great candidate for dualsporting. you'd be able to rack the hell out of the tail end with top box and saddlebags. I think they would feel more road worthy than a 600.
But plating in california...
I decided to just forget it!

Keep on ridin!

michigan bluff...she still had stickers!

deadwood ridge...this dog rides trail!

for sale! $500 at the time

fordyce lake...she became a loaner for bikeless friends

mossy pond...this is going to bottom out the rear

elkins flat...in a field of wild flowers

woodchuck camp...ready to roll
Of particular intrest is the 20 year old folgers coffee can cancer repair.
Two hose clamps and a spooge of muffler seal takes care of that rusty leak.
The spark arrester has never been removed from the muffler. You wont be getting it out, it's fused!

These are a very special, "transitional" bike!
Everyone should have a chance to experience one.
Dropping her over on the right side floods the carb.
There's a certain feel to her...
I've acheived amazing feats with it!
I would no longer want to have to ride her for every outing though

Good going Brucifer

Hey 22many, thanks for the pics!
In your first pic I see a TT500, a nice ol' '68-'72 Ford shortbed with the obligatory speakers set out on the roof (I remember doing that) but what is the other bike?

You got me researching time/date/old photos in order to eliminate.
Hadn't really considered the "off shot" front end in the shot...for some time,
But I've come up with this...

That would have to be a 1976 KL250.
I may have the model designation wrong. It's a stripped down street legal factory enduro bike of the day. The ford owner had that. This dates the pic to pre 88. It'd have to be just shortly thereafter that the ford owner bought his 88 XR600R.
It's really the only possable conclusion I can come to.
Those with a good eye might confirm this via the brake drum or fork sliders.

Brucifer

And other 500 guys...

You did see my video from a year or so ago right?
My 500 was a loner bike for a while.
My bikeless friend went for a ride with us. He also sang this song...back in 88.
Said by some to be the worst song ever heard!
Feel free to lambaste it or love it.
Oh, I had great plans to take a shot of scratching out on everything mentioned in the song...
...hamburgers, gheto blasters, filet of fish, ect.
I wimped out...But I did get the donut sign ha, ha

Man, that's terrible. The next time I watch that vid will be on mute. That wouldn't even have made it on the Dr. Demento Show.

I think this is one Big Ed was talking about.
