IL: Getting a title for a non-titled motorcycle

Anyone know how easy/hard this is in the state of Illinois? I imagine it just takes time, but what if the bike's owner in question can't be found? I'm assuming as long as the bike was never reported stolen, the bike can be titled under my name eventually...

Does anyone have experience with this? Of course, I trust my inmates more than my local DMV

You will have to post bond for 2 years of the bikes value, then you'll get a clear title and your bond back.

Yup

Get a written appraisal at a dealer.

Go to your insurance co. and tell them you need a bond for what your license remitter would call a "bonded title"

Last one I did was $50 per year thru Country Companies. Although I dropped it after 1 year and they never billed me for another year.

State sent me a clear title and I said the heck with it after a year and really the bond protects you from somebody coming up with a title for your bike at a later date and accusing you of theft.

Just a extra hoop you have to jump thru, your remitter and insurance dude can guide you.

Is it "liscense'able"?

If you have a title for, hypothetically a WR450, that says "enduro", then you have quite a battle ahead of you, gotta prove/show all required equipment is installed and functional.

I have been working on it for 2 + years. Mine was a salvage/rebuilt so maybe you will have better luck.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm assuming that during those 2 or so years that I won't be able to ride it...correct? That would kind of suck, but then again, the application itself is quite a project.

My plan is to buy my friend's 70's CB360 for a case of beer. The bike has everything except a tank and a battery, and the engine is in pieces. At least he has everything organized in his basement. I think it's a fair trade for something I can learn to wrench on.

Riding it is probably far down the road, but the instance it is rideable, I would love to be able to ride it. Can anyone confirm that I can/can't ride it during those 2 years?

Will the DMV folk or the insurance people be better at answering my questions?

CB 360.. You are going to go upside down on this one unless you just want to enjoy the process. You could get one in good shape running with a title for less than you will spend on yours

Have fun if you want or move on..... You are not going to save $$ on this.

Who said anything about money?

I will gladly pay a little bit more for a great experience. I already have a bike to ride, now I just need to keep my hands busy and learn more :)

If you want to talk about money, you can't buy a rewarding experience where your sweat, blood, and tears go into it, but let's not talk about money

But that's just me...and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who understands this. Thanks for looking out for me though!

If you are going to tear it down anyway, you might find a junked frame with a good title so the numbers match and start from there. In fact i may know a guy who has one. Will let you know if i find out. Ed
