smugmuggin...

i'm gonna attempt to do this again..
the start, an amazing bike..
ok, got it..phew. uploading images a lot harder than turning wrenches it seems..
i wanted faster handling, better brakes.. after doing a GSXR front end on my SV650, i knew that was an awesome fix. always imagining one on the airhead, seemed kinda challenging, would it work?? .after stumbling on fellow inmate Nella s great posts on his build, i realized it was possible..Big Thanks! this is a classic thing..standing on the shoulders of others. great.
so got started..
at the same time, i needed a paint job( my favorite Audi gray, figgered it would blend w/ the ohlins and GSXR fork legs..) i'm in the great pacific northwest, gray must be our favorite color., wanted to do(finally! after years n years..) san jose port polish dual plug heads..needed rings, plus always loved black wheels..
continuing:
oh oh, kinda scary
at the same time, well, previously.. started to source the front end, rotors, spacers being machined..
got the front end, classic Craigslist.(outta L.A.).oh oh ( a continuing theme..) yeah.. an 09 GSXR 750(as per Nellas great build map) yeah, "my personal bike, 3000 miles..,mint.." 350 bux . my great son in law picks it up, smart fellow biker, " oh oh...missing the calipers, better talk to him.." guy promises he'll send them.. blah blah blah..ends up an 06 -07 , takes six weeks to send calipers, they're shitty, got better ones(ebay).., never sends brake perch, original damaged..
i'll stop now..fuckin endless..guy's Felix Nguyen outta Santa Ana..beware. dickhead.(where s the dickhead emoticom..)
o.k lets move on..
shiny fresh powdercoated front wheel. manly rotors (ebay ).

ahhhh, diggin the concept..its like those emo shoe gazer kids, i stare transfixed..
anywhoo, the front end comes together, got the lower triple powdercoated, starting to have a real relationship w/ my powdercoat guy..i'll see him a lot.
Now we start having conflict..in this next image, the partialy assembled front end..with the sulking Ducati in the background jealously realizing something is amiss.. how to pay for all this??? somebody's got to go.. C'mon....its just a concept, right????

more manana amigos

Round Two..

Thanks all..
This,so far, will be a record of what I did in the last six to eight weeks..
when we last left my cluttered shop, i was awaiting the painted tank, and seat.was a close call on the color. an audi color, did all the research at local audi dealer parts dept(thanks) local guy ready to paint, unfortunately(fortunately) saw the Audi TT that i'd been lusting after, never getting the VIN number on the dash to trace the color; parked locally..wow. sunny day in the city of subdued excitement...and...it had pearl in it!!!! no!!! called the painter immediately, just ready to paint that afternoon, and asked him to subtract the pearl..whew.
they turned out great, three coats color, three coats clear.
heres an image as i started to mock up..( a disclaimer: sorry about pix quality consistency.)

another:

starting to see the concept comin together again..concept vs. reality(Ducati's gonna be pissed..)
pulling all the parts and pieces together..got the steering head adaptive bearings, spacer made, assembled front end, course i had local machinist fabricate the axle, lets slap that baby on..

sorry, everyone: kind of a little time warp there..
there was the headlight bracket mount thing, and the super braced swingarm deal.
Gotta give a big shoutout to fellow inmate House of Fubar for the braced swingarm. As some of you might know, he's doing a very cool monoshock adaptation on his airhead..He didn't need his braced one, needed a stocker,so we traded..except, i needed the disc brake arm bracket on the bottom of the s.a., he graciously offered to fab one up. solid. great skills, beautiful welds..
very kind. thanks.
so, got it home, powdercoated, made shorter brake arm, new swingarm bearings..
needed to mount headlight..did the pipe style clamps on my SV conversion(image later) but thought i could do it better..got these super slick clamps from Aztek8 outta Florida, spendy..but its only the Ducati..they use only one clamp per leg, but research on other sites mentioned they were prone to cracking(Delron), and slipping..so used four total. moolah baby..owwww. but exactly what i needed..
so fabbed(barely) ,not quite loaded again fab skills here,folks.. yeah hacksaw ,file vise, drill..made these:

oh oh, neanderthal, plus too far out from steering head.. hmmm. Re-do:

sanding, rattlecan..o.k..
real time? better get more coffee, gotta walk the dogs,...
phew.. social networking is a lot of work..
more later
ciao,puppies.

Great Build out

Hey Ed,

Fantastic Job. Good to see you have finally moved beyond the "rat bike Aesthetic" and let your true talents shine.

Thirdly..

Thanks again..
Mr. Speedy Dog: yeah, dude, without yer wrenchin n all, prolly wouldn't have gotten this far.. Remember takin the front end apart, putin the CC prod. upper triple on, hacksawin then too.. progressive springs..?? back inna day,yo.
Better stop there bout all the other stories!! That panty thing was good tho.http://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/naughty.gif
Nella,again man..
Mr Wacky drummer guy..( hoping your inmate name is like Dave Grohl, the Melvins kinda drumming as opposed to the new aged old guys in a circle talkin bout how they hate their dads..) http://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/icon10.gif
but yeah, gonna be sellin the old stuff off soon, inmate pricing..got a great CC Prod upper triple too..
So round three:
i believe i mentioned my long lusted after san jose port, polish, dual plugged heads..yeah, got em, and here's another shout out: my young local beemer guru Mistah DeeJay Kilmer, another new inmate, sure assisted me,as well as other procedures..thanks bud!
so they're on:

Yeah, shoulda really cleaned the bike well before starting to take it apart..sigh..
so, observant eyes would see the big missing item: the top triple.
When i did that SV, o.k. here's an image..

the one big thing on that build was i didn't want to use clipons..owww. the stock GSXR upper triple is stout at the fork leg clamp ends, but pretty thin in the middle where you'd wanna drill for riser clamps..so, i contacted a great industrial designer Graeme Scott,CAD design guy who was an SV guy, who was making these super cool upper triples for this handlebar configuration.
http://sites.google.com/site/s1sv650...xr-conversions.
they were awesome. so i'm doing the same for the airhead w/ the same comfy cool Coerse competition low (kinda) superbike bars..our S bars are 24" wide w/ bout 2 1/2" rise..These are 27 wide, bout 1 1/2" should look the same as the SV image..
plus, through some great postings here, decided to do the Acewell.speedo/tach thing..
o.k. big drum roll here..
here's the triple:

should be here mid next week..
totally stoked.
so wanted to get rid of my big ol 24 lb. Odyssey boat anchor(thats like 4 %?? of bike weight..so went w/ that new Shorai 2.2 lb.!! lithium ion battery thats a direct replacement for our airheads..270 CCA,18 amp..gonna mount it in the seat..maybe some of the more electrical/battery guys could give me an opinion here..i'll mount securely w/ foam,etc.., but heat issues?? as was mentioned over at pelican site?? any hoo, its trick, 6' long,4" tall, 2 1/2" wide. plus the nice lady at the cycle werld show kiosk was... well, nice.
will work on install this week..
so carbs.. got my 40mm Bings but i also have some 39 mm. FCRs i got as part of my Ducati deal..flip floppin on puting them on, may be a tad too big, inlet tube fab, dyno time to tune it, hmmm. the Rocy point Cycle dual 34mm conversion seems more do-able. but I stuck one of the FCRs on for giggles,,Concepts , right??? the Ducati's totally steamin now..hot passionate Italian babe..woohoo.

gotta do so much more but i'm at this point now..

Lots to do......

got the triple..

got the triple i had made so that i could run bars instead of clipons..
also had it drilled for the acewell speedo..

here's a real fuzzy shot to start it out

i'm running Coerse hyperbars, about 27" wide, low rise superbike style..They'e wider than our 24" wide S bars..my eye's getting used to them, but boy, they first looked like flat track bars..should be comfy..(of course,on the way to the cafe..) i'll probably ask the folks down at the cafe..but what do you guys think? bars better in black?? coerse has very few options, black isn't one of them..this titanium was the best option.

now that the bars and speedo are in place,i'll get to the brake lines, switchgear ,etc..
diggin all the parts and pieces, hooking everything up will be interesting, but inmates have done this stuff before and will be researching posts(thanks)
also mounted the Shorai lithium ion battery in the seat...seems really solid, i'll keep checking it of course..

did a little aluminum butchering, and made this brakelight/license plate bracket..may have to a little shimming to get perfect..but..hey..
drill holes for plate, trim the plate part too,
then powdercoaters(again)
think it woulda been tricker to insert smaller LED brakelight in back end of seat, but didn't wanna risk this seat. maybe phase 2 or 3.,
i get to run a historic plate, bike older than thirty years here in Washington,so found one from the correct decade color scheme..

cheers.
