Gen lite needed?
Hi all a quick question. I removed speedo & idiot lites etc on my 91 R80GS. I have read somewhere that the gen lamp is part of the charging system. Is this correct? If so I'll just mount a remote one somewhere no probs but if not needed I won't bother.
Cheers PS please don't post a ' use the search function' reply thanks. |

You do need the charging light circuit. An electrical charge travels through it prior to starting to charge the coils in the stator. It of course also lets you know when your output from the alt falls below what it should be. If you remotely locate it, be sure to use a bulb of similar wattage so you get the correct resistance. I did this with an r50 that I removed the speedo from. I ended up putting a small digital speedo on it, and mounted a small plate to the tripples with two lights, oil and charging.

Did you bypass the light to keep juice going to the gen before starting? I have always wondered if that is needed. Dad has a VW trike that has the same setup as a bosch and couldn't get power without the light hooked up or bypassed.

It's interesting that this came up right as I started to install warning lights on my 100/7. I've had the charging light on my bike disconnected since April and it's been charging fine.
Tonight I experimented with a 12v led in the charging circuit and it seems to work fine. I might add a 400ohm resistor in parallel, not sure yet.

I've started it without anything plugged into the idiot lite plug & no problems. I'm not planning on using it as a round-the-worlder & I don't commute or sit at lites so May not worry about it- just put the tender on it every few weeks.
Shanna thanks for that link. It gives me the details of what I need to make one up. Cheers guys. |

My newest project has no charging light. Went total loss just so I don't have to deal with those ural alternators
