Wife's '09 F650GS keeps blowing headlight bulbs... ?

Need your advice here, electrical geniuses... Mrs Mollygrubber's '09 650 keeps blowing headlight bulbs, both high and low beams, but the little front running light is still OK. She says her digital display intermittently goes blank too, when she stops in traffic (?).

I'm not that electrically savvy, I can add lights and run wiring etc., but the vagaries of CANBUS systems is a little beyond me. Are these issues related, or a computer issue, or is it more likely a simple short? I haven't torn into it yet, didn't have the heart after just dropping multiple thousands on her car .

Any pre-emptive advice appreciated, thanks!

They all do that, it's called a feature.

Betting My Remaining Canadian Tire Money

When's the last time you cleaned and tightened the battery connections?

How old is the battery?

Hmm. That's a good point. Original battery, and all these shenanigans started right after I installed her GPS. I know I snugged down the connections (twice - I checked that first, and removed the GPS for good measure), but I didn't consider the state of the battery, because she really doesn't ride all that much. I guess a lightly used 5 year old battery is still a 5 year old battery . OK, I'm a dumbass. I'll get it replaced.

My favourite battery and supplier.

Also look into getting her the latest RR which runs at a higher voltage. Keeps battery and electronics happy. It's in the alternator thread somewhere. You need one that ends in SC.

Like this one:

But I usually pay $40-$60 so offer in that range considering shipping is free. Need a US address tho.

Mine ate bulbs for the first 50K miles. Like one every 7-9K miles. I attributed it to off-road riding. However, it's been a good streak...about 12K on this bulb !

That sounds strange. 7 bikes and over 200k miles and only 1 headlight.

Mine has been a bulb eater since day one - 5,000 to 7,000 miles per. R1200GS was the same way. Using 55Watt bulbs - nothing fancy. Bunch of threads on the subject: http://advrider.com/forums/showthrea...ighlight=osram http://advrider.com/forums/showthrea...ighlight=osram

FWIW

Get the output of your Rectifier/Regulator. Simple volt meter check. Vary the RPM of the engine.

I don't know the specific specs...but some one on this site does.

I believe the charging voltage is approx 14.5 volts.....I believe much higher than that could be a problem..

Also chech the ground side of the RR to see if it too is a good reliable connection.
