Some nooby questions.

I was told the 950A cams are more aggressive to create higher torque down low. So it seems like a good idea to install on the 990Adv. Did you do a full throttle test and cams didn't hit the pistons at red line rpm?

Oh yeah...it hit the rev limiter many times during the "spirited" runs.

990 Cams the root of all evil?

We continued our gas mileage testing this weekend...

Does anyone else see a pattern developing here???

The 990 listed on line 6 is a near bone injected bike with the exception of a 2-1 exhaust with a single Leo Vince silencer with insert. I was expecting this stock 990 to get at least 35 mpg, especially if ridden easy.

I should also note that before I installed 950 cams in my 990 , I never saw more than 30 mpg on these same roads whether it was injected or carb'd.

Great job BillyD.

I must hurry and buy 950 cams. They are going to become rare in a few day's.
Cheers.

Perhaps, but bear in mind that I know of no one that has tested 950 cams in an injected bike; however, there are several data points that indicate the SD cams do work well.

If anything, I would expect a run on SD cams.

I've just measured my 950 cams. I was going to pop them into my (carbed) 990 engine but the figures for lift don't agree with BillyD's and I don't want to risk bashing the valves.

Billy quoted 990 cams as 0.354" lift = 9.00 mm. My measurements agree with this - I get 9.10 mm.

However he quoted 950 cams as intake 0.347" = 8.80 mm and exhaust 0.335" = 8.50 mm.

I measured mine as intake 9.80 mm (0.386") and exhaust 8.50 mm.

So it seems my 950 intake cams have 1mm (0.039") more lift than Billy's. I've no idea how much clearance there is to the piston so I'm not putting these into the 990 for now. Anyone got any wisdom on this? :)

The 950 cams are from an '03 bike.

edit - mind you a bit of searching suggests that other bikes (superduke?) have cam lift of up to 10 mm (0.406") ... if the pistons are the same I should be safe. But are they ...?

IIRC, Tahoeacr OR Cyborg is running SD cams on their '07 990S.

Hmmm. Sounds like I might have a math error by forgetting to add the .040" check clearance to my maximum lift measurement on the 950 intakes. I flagged the possible error in my earlier post with "???"

One thing is certain, however, I've been using the 950 cams in my 990 for a couple of months now and love how the bike is working.

This, coupled with Tahoeacre's comment, suggests you should have no clearance issues.

I will re-measure the 950 intakes the next time I do a valve adjust, but that won't be for a while since I'm sick of working on the thing. For now, I'm just riding it hard, especially after having SPS do the suspension.
