GS-911 without Windows (using wine)

I am working on a generalized how-to and explanation which I will either post later in the thread or I will link to it. I am still playing with some other options that might be easier to implement on linux, but here is a preliminary post - a quick and dirty way to get GS911 working in Linux with wine right now.

These were compiled (other than libftd2xx.so) on Ubuntu 10.10 on AMD64. That said, it should work for most modern linux distros.

OK, Lets just get it working! The instructions assume an x86-64 linux distro, but if you are using an i386 linux distro just substitute lib everywhere you see lib32 below:

  • FIRST, if you haven't already - install wine. On Ubuntu you can do this via
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install wine

  • NEXT, copy the ftd2xx driver and device table libraries to /usr/lib(32)

    Code:
    sudo cp libftd2xx.so.0.4.16 /usr/lib32/
  • NEXT, setup the appropriate symlinks in /usr/lib or /usr/lib32:

    Code:
    sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libftd2xx.so.4.16 /usr/lib32/libftd2xx.so.0
    sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libftd2xx.so.4.16 /usr/lib32/libftd2xx.so
  • LASTLY, copy the gs911usb.dll.so wrapper to usr/lib(32)/wine

    Code:
      sudo cp gs911usb.dll.so /usr/lib32/wine

That should do the trick. When you install GS-911 it will load the wrapper version of gs911usb rather than the windows version. You will NOT be able to use the downloader - it does its own thing - so you will need to download the GS-911 install bundle from windows first. Once you have the install bundle, just run the install with wine and you are off to the races.

If you have trouble, are not using Ubuntu or have wine configured for some other paths, just wait for the proper write-up.

This method (though not the binaries) should generalize to Mac OS X. The more detailed write-up should enable someone with a mac to create the same libraries for OS X. No more dual booting

Link to the write-up

The article is terse - send me a PM if you want/need more detail or have trouble.

Also, if anybody in Austin who wants to let me borrow their Macbook I will give this a shot for OS X as well.
