When I got out of that incredible section at the end, I wanted to go back around and do it again.

But first I had to air up again when I got back to the road.

But I decided to save it for next time and head up to Scotty's Castle and maybe the Racetrack.

When I got to Scotty's Castle, it was deserted (pun intended). Two cars in the parking lot. So I went inside and asked about the underground tour. There was one in 15 minutes so I decided to take that as I always seem to miss that for some reason.

Meantime, a guy comes in and says, "Is that your motorcycle out there?"

Uh oh.

"Yes, it is."

"Well you better get out there! A Raven is opening it up and taking your stuff."

Yeah right. No Raven can get in those Vario cases or the tank bag....

But I went back out and the Raven had opened the zippers on the tank bag, tossed a bunch of stuff out, and had my bag of beef jerky, and was munching away!

That's a smart Raven! Haha.

I zip-tied the tank bag closed and headed over to the Underground Tour.

The entire Castle had these long corridors underneath. They were all around the pool area, under the house, running out to the guest area, and back to the power plant. Pretty amazing for 1920 technology.

Everything seemed to run on water power. Lots of Pelton wheels running various things.

Nice lighting too. Check this chandelier.

Thousands and thousands of tiles were stacked near the pool. It was never finished and the plan was to cover it with these tiles. Spanish tiles in very good shape.

Kinda sad they never finished that pool....

The energy generated was stored in two huge stacks of Edison batteries wired in series.

The main power control board in the generator room. The Pelton wheels in there still work (that's what is lighting the bulbs).

The tour guides dress in period costumes.

I really liked her hat.

After the Underground Tour, the light was getting long. That's a drawback to being out in DV in the winter: it's nice weather, but the days are very short.

Due to gas concerns and the late day, I decided to skip a run out to the Racetrack and head back to Ridgecrest. That would also let me run down Panamint Valley at sunset. I really like that ride with the setting sun on Telescope Peak.

Stopped on the way at the original Stovepipe Wells. Story is, this was the only water in the Valley on the run from Rhyolite/Beatty over to Ballarat and the Panamints back in the day. But the sand would sometimes obscure the well, so someone placed a big stovepipe in the sand so travelers could find it.

I thought the way the wind had sculpted the sand out there looked pretty cool and tried to capture it.

Gassed at new Stovepipe Wells, then up and over Towne Pass to roll down the Panamint Valley.

These signs are new since l was last out there....

The shadows were creeping up to Telescope Peak and I was rolling down the road really enjoying the show, then the full moon popped up!

Wow!

Road Trips don't get much better than this! Just amazing rolling down that valley to these views.

I stopped at the Ballarat marker in the dark and fired up the GoPro. Interesting video cause it was really dark. But the little camera compensated and made it look quite light.

That was a really nice run.

Made it to Ridgecrest and the swanky EconoLodge again. Mapped out the long way home the next day, then saw Carizzo Plain sitting out there in the middle of nowhere. Then I thought of just heading over to Morro Bay for the next night...and zig-zagging across the valley and riding Soda Lake across Carizzo. I've never done it. Been past it a zillion times, but never actually ridden out there. So...what the heck....

Up the next morning, down 14 to 178 and then decided to take Caliente Bodfish road south from Lake Isabella. Great road! Here's the view looking back north to the lake as you climb out of the valley.
