I should be ready to go with my XR400R. So, who's up for some dirt?

Where are you going? Local? Is it good enough to justify a ride up from Richmond?

I'm waiting on wheel bearings to come in, but should be good to go by then. I am jonesing to ride this 650.. I took it apart a couple days after I bought it and have been wrenching on it ever since.

I'm planning to organize a flatlander assault on the hills within the next couple weeks. Probably back at the Crabtree falls/ Big levels area, since Pedlar is closed for the winter from what I understand. If it turns out to be the same weekend you should meet us.

I think its definatly worth coming up here. If you consider Peddlars gap good, then this area is much better. Peddlers gap, from the pictures I have seen sucks ass. And the only time its challenging is if you ride a sportbike through there.

Terrain up here in the illegal areas is not rocky, alot of single track muddy stuff, creek crossings etc.. The legal stuff is usually full of rocks like taskers gap, taskers gap sucks.

Why are you having so much trouble with your xr650r? All my friends have sold their xr650rs now, they all have ktm 525's, they say that is the way to go. I think im going to give the wr450f a try one day.

Change the fork oil on the xr, the stock oil is soppose to be really crappy, also grease everything up and lets go.

Dude, you're supposed to wait for the weather to get cold before you start heavy-duty wrenching. Nothing sucks worse than being bikeless on a 60-degree day in January.

Not really trouble, mostly PM. Hey it's winter and I got nothing else to do..

Even though the 650 was barely used - with original tires still on it - I bought it from from a kid, who after buying it new, had Honda-Manassas install the HRC power-up for $1200, painted it black w/ a spray can, then let it sit till the carb gummed up. Looked like crap, was a bear to start and wouldn't idle. Leaked coolant from about 5 places where he half-assedly installed stainless braided hose wrap w/ bright blue annodized clamp covers. (Bling-Bling!!)

So I far I have: cleaned the carb (twice), set float height, removed the 'bling', stopped the leaks and put in fresh coolant. I've changed the oil, adjusted the valves, cleaned and lubed the throttle cables and routed them the right way.. I've greased the axles and steering head. The rear bearings seem sloppy so I'm replacing those. I'm going to replace the countershaft seal and clutch bushing per "The Pig Pen's" instructions, and one of the throttle cables. Hadn't planned on the fork oil, but may do that too. I transferred the title to my name and my old tags over to it this morning. Almost there!

Before I go out in the boondocks on it, I want it to be a known entity.

Arm wrenching torque and all, eh?! I'm not gonna whine... I'm just aware of my lack of control when it comes to all things adrenaline laced- You haven't had the pleasure of watching me ski yet... terminal velocity is my friend. If I don't think I can ride it without getting myself in trouble- then I'm gonna look for something a little more tame. (Can't be gettin' dropped tho! )

If the weather gets cold again, we are going to have to hook up for a few runs somewhere.....

If the Honda is too much we can swap the DR for the XR

Good luck my friend!

Done anything to the shocks??? besides compress 'em, I mean~ I seriously may take you up on that- I like the DR a lot! and the XR could potentially be too much ooomph for comfort. Hey- at the very least, we can swap back and forth when we ride together and get to try some different bikes out.
