Oldest Craigslist scam in the book. Run don't walk.

And the Vermont route only works for bikes that are 15 years old or ≤300cc.

Not sure in other states but in NY you can apply for a replacement title online,,,, takes about 3 minutes. All you need is the last titled persons date of birth and the VIN. The replacement title gets mailed to the address on the title. I've done it a half dozen times or so when the person didn't want to be "bothered with the paperwork"

From post #72 quoting luniz7:

This might help some people out with what to do on the form. Remember this is for a 15+ year old motorcycle. Im not sure what you would do for something newer. You need to fill out the following boxes on form #TA-VD-119.

1A- will be NEW
1B
2
3C
4A- will be you as the owner, ignore the VT DL
5B- will be the seller you bought it from
6A- purchase price of the bike and the 6% tax of the purchase price
8- sign and date
9- Registration fee. $44.00. Take the tax amount from 6A. You will fill out Registration, Tax, and the Total Fees.

Send completed Vermont registration form, check for the fee (made out to Vermont DMV, VIN verification form, and bill of sale to 120 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05603-0001.

Has anybody who's gotten a VT plate and registration successfuly used that to get a title in their home state? Anybody tried and failed?

I'm curious because Missouri DOR & MSHP are title nazis, especially when it comes to motorcycles. They find a way to invalidate everything.

Yes, And NY is a title Nazi State as well. We have done it with two bikes, rode a year on the VT tag, and when it cam time for renewal we changed it to NY, No problems. Worst case, if they wonder why you have it registered there, tell them you bought it there and wanted to ride it home, so you registered it there. Now you are home and know you have to put it where you live.

Have your old friend write up a new bill of sale.
As long as it's not stolen it's just paperwork.

Have the "old friend" fill out a bill of sale for an agreed amount and have it notarized.

Call them to ask for the tax value. I paid $250 for mine, they valued the bike at $660 so I had to pay a few dollars more tax. Also I rounded it up and cut a check for the next dollar amount, they wanted it to be exact.

You can leave the line for Vermont ID or SSN blank, they know no one wants to give the SSN out anymore.

I now would definitely call them for the tax value. Guess and it may come back needing additional funds.

Here's a handy PDF of a blank bill of sale form if needed. Missouri and Kansas have always been satisfied with this, although we don't need to have them notarized here.

Does it matter if he was never listed as the owner? heck if not then anyone could write the bill of sale right?

If he never had legitimate possession of the bike, that's fraud. If he had legal grounds to defend his claim of ownership, such as the titled owner turning the bike over to him at some point and saying "it's yours," then he could write you a bill of sale, even if he does not have the title.
