Great to see some local adventuring! BTW I think you can get into the sand pit sans-fence if you go over the sand hill on your left just entering the sand pit going north bound. Also behind the new development on the hill above the sandpit there are a couple little areas you can play around in :) Link to map for reference: http://goo.gl/maps/um79

Ya lots of bikes use that route. Very popular for all types, Harley's, dual-purpose and street bikes. Although the street guys can do that loop in 20 min. Not that I know anything about that.
