Maybe you missed my earlier post #197 on this. You can put a beefed-up Wilbers spring on the stock shock. This thread discusses and shows pics. For prices, contact Ted Porter at beemershop.com. Or get a custom-made one by Moto-Pro or Sasquatch. For fork springs, I'd call Klaus at HyperProUSA or just buy some from Race Tech.

This is the part I have a problem with.

Cutting a spring in half Doubles the Spring Rate!!!!!!!!!
It also has the potential for half the displacement.

If the diameter wire is wound into larger coils, the rate is weaker for the same number of coils.

Check out your springs here.

Don
You're right, I was mistaken. I was confusing cutting off coils with adjusting preload, but they are not the same.

I also totally missed the part where this is on a VStrom 1000 not a 650 and I've no excuse for that. It's a great thread to follow along though, and I am looking forward to future developments.

Thumb Looking good

That really looks good now you have it aligned closer and a lot of the details like lights etc. are coming together. Don't know if you know or not but I think that body was the International version made back east somewhere. Don't know too much about that version except that I had one on my old Guzzi until recently. It was on a modified Ural frame with a Chinese fender. The rack on the back was one I threw together and actually had carpet on it so my dog could use it to launch herself into the sidecar.

The original was known as a Swallow and came from England. Side Strider had a version at one time they called the Bingham MK II. I believe the only differences in the bodies were slight variations in the nose insets.

YUP,thats my tub !!!.I'm going mad max kinda and making a polished aluminum diamond plate windshield for it.Ya it's amazing how many LITTLE details there are AFTER you get it all hooked up.So I took it on the freeway today ( to work and home) and it still pulls a little to the right under constant throttle BUT if you really hammer on it ( 40 to 70 mph in a hurry !!) it doesn't pull that hard right it kinda go's straight.I will talk to Wilbers soon,I talked to Sasquatch a while back and he didn't sound to interested in doing JUST a spring!,BUT that was for a 2 wheeler a sidecar is a totally different animal !!.

PS..Hey Barry do you know how to remove the seat from that tub??.I have been looking at it but can't figure it out.

Give it just a tiny more lean out. You have more than enough toe at 1". Sounds like you have it real close though. Actually it sounds better than some "professional" installs I've ridden.
The seat is surely not the original I would think. If there are not obvious bolts protruding through under the floor take a closer look inside. There is a sheet of plywood built into the floor to stiffen it and it might have lag bolts or some such just bolting it through to the wood. Another possibility is to try pulling the seat cushion up at the back. Hard to tell without seeing it. B

Ya I'm not sure if it's the original seat or not, there are NO bolts or anything going thru the plywood to the bottom of the tub. There is however some kind of a rail along the front of the seat on the floor.I would really like to get it out and recover the UGLY brown seat with Black .Ya it feels like I'm getting close on the set up,I can't wait till the leading legs get here later this week, and the new springs get bought soon !!.

Hey Barry.

One last question,How long are the brake lines that come with the DMC leading links??.I got a used set today but the brake lines were old and no good,so he didn't send them. Also ( ok so it's 2 questions !! ) Have you ever put new springs on a Vstrom??,if so what weight did you guys go in the rear??.Stock is 8.6 or so and I can get springs up to 21!!.The chart says for a 800 lb bike ( I figured bike + sidecar ) and a 300 lb rider they recomend a 16 kg spring !!!.

Things are looking good, I will be interested in seeing how the springs are sorted.

FINALLY got around to dealing with the windshield issue.I tried plexi, but it kept cracking.Found some Lexan but it was $40.00.SO I had some alum diamond plate that matched the skid plate and step so I used that.I kinda like the MAD MAX/RAT look so here it is.

I'm thinking about getting some of those Harley windshield bags to go behind it so my wife has a place for stuff.
