So I finally got some things built that I have been trying to do for awhile.I got the bike rack done and it works good.I also built a left side hwy peg and it is ok,I think I might make it a little wider so I don't burn my ankle on the engine !!.One of the problems I had was that the right side foot peg is real close to one of the sidecar mounts. It makes it so that I can only use about 50% of it,so I made another peg that go's next to it.

Getting ready for the Canadian trip in 2 weeks,I decided to build a trunk instead of useing the Givi from my Vstrom.I didn't want to have to transfer everything everytime I swapped bikes.I used 3/8 CDX with 3 coats of bedliner,2HD hinges and 2 old style Jeep hood latches.I chose the Jeep latches because they are spring loaded so they are always pulling down ( shut ).I sprayed it with water and it only leaked on 2 seams and that was before I caulked the inside,so it should be water tight now.It is 20"x15.5"x10",I put a Givi backrest on it that I had laying around ( I use to be a Givi salesman!! ).All in all it turned out good and works great but I will be the first to admit that it is kinda UGLY.!!!
Oh ya it cost me about $35 to build.

So we completed our trip,1,200 miles FULLY loaded ( 1,200+lbs ) and here are some off the things I learned.
1..Vancouver Canada drivers are F$&@in NUT's!!.
2..Gas in the US is cheap !!
3..Canada doesn't like to call mountain passes PASSES!!.
4..Suzuki GS's are built like anvils.

The only problem we had ( besides running out of gas 3 times, thank god for our RotoPax!!. ) was a blown right fork seal,200 miles into the trip.
The bike used very little oil, leaked most of it.We ran it HARD,sometimes 2nd and 3rd gear for miles up hill in 80+ dergrees and it never missed a beat.

Amazing trip and a amazing rig !!

Thumb Well done

Glad to see the plan came together so well.
Looked like you both did well and had a grand time together. (navigation included)
Thank you both for sharing the trip.
Makes me want to do another trip over there,
Mind you I already did.
Below are a couple of pics of a trip the wife and I did in 2009 (4000klm) 1st is Lone Pine and 2nd is near Flagstaff.
Done on an old bike with older riders, would do it again in a flash......don't know of any cheap flash's for sale?
Bottom pic is the wife pretending to be the rider.... not true but a good pillion
Cheers, Bruce

Since you had a VStrom and now the GS850 what did you like and didn't like about one or the other bike. I understand you had issues with the Vstrom.

I'm currently looking for a tug ans have consider the vstrom or an older bike.

Ok here go's.

GS850 pro's

1..Simple,air cooled,carbs and shaft drive.
2..Cheap,I bought it in like new cond with 22,000 miles for $1,400.
3..Smooth power.
4..Easy to maintain,valve adjust,plugs etc.
4..Classic looks.
5..Easy to find parts.
6..Dead battery starts, just push and go.
7..Easy to attach a car,it has a full frame.
8..Easy to mod steering and cheap.

GS850 cons.

1..Not much powet,only 60hp when new.
2..Crummy mpg with a heavy car/load,average about 25mpg.
3..Air cooled, only a con on really hot days.
4..Shaft drive,means you can't regear for sidecar use.Only a problem because of a somewhat high 1st gear.

DL1000 pros.

1..Plenty of power, could haul a loaded car at "above hwy speeds" !!.
2..LC,great for hot days.
3..FI,great for cold weather starts and mpg's.got around 35-37mpg loaded.
4..More offroad ready.

DL1000 cons.

1..NOT simple, not easy to repair on the road.
2..Not maintainace friendly.
3..FI,if you drop below say 7.3V you can not push start it !!.
4..No frame, you must buy or build a subframe to attach a car.
5..Steering mods cost $$$$$$$.

There is probably more pros and cons for both, but these are what I thought of off the top of head.
To do it all over again I would still go with the GS,But I would go with a 1100.I like going to bed at night far far away from home knowing I ( or a local mech ) could probably fix it if it didn't start the next morning..

I have been looking for a good winter/snow tire for the hack. All the ones I find are really spendy or full on knobbies.I wanted something like a trials tire for well under $100,but it's hard to find one in a 130/17 for the GS.So while I was out test driving a truck at work I stopped by Bent Bike and they had a big pile of " surplus" tires out back.I dug thru them for awhile and found this.

Cheng Chen..5.00-17..$20

Brand new just sat for a few years at the bottom of the pile so it's flat.I'm gonna put some chunks of 2x4 between the beads and keep it inside for a week or two till spreads out.

I just spooned on a 130/80/18 tubeless 700 Shinko to replace the 705 that I had a flat from a nail. For some reason the patch didn't work on the tube and I spun the rim inside the tire to much for my liking while trying to load on trailer.

I had a blast for the 300+ miles of 70 percent gravel roads. I was leading the only other rig at the rally.
