I drove my pickup through, many years ago, all I remember was a grouping of rural residences.
I did not know it was "Ortley", then, so I was not looking for anything, and therefore found nothing.

One might say the same thing about the Suicide Grade route, there might be lots of history in Ortley, I dunno....

Bald Butte

After living in the HR area for a couple of years now I have meant to make my way up to the top of Bald Butte for quite some time, yesterday provided the perfect opportunity. The trail was rougher than I expected though. Pretty awesome view of the valley.

You made it up! I've too busy lately to ride up there again. How was the getting around the gate at the upper end?

I should ride up and check out Lake Branch Rd. I'll be looking at taking photos of the final stage of the Mt. Hood Classic and want to position myself up on the rock outcropping near the top that I like to call Ambush Pass. I need to see if there's room to get the moto parked out of the way of the riders.

Gate wide open!

Lake branch still closed at both ends....bastards! So the bicyclists get to go through there?
. I'm really kinda scared to see how bad it looks up there anyway.

Well, it's the Mt. Hood Classic Bike race. The organizers of the race do all the road clearing for the routes. It may have still been closed due to the helo logging in the area though.

I'd like to ride from Portland to Madras off road as much as possible. Anybody have any routes? From there I'd like to ride through Ashwood onto Fort Rock and the Christmas Valley area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many have tried and all have failed to find an all dirt route. Warm Springs Reservation is a large part of the problem. However there are some really great routes which are about 50/50. You don't say what you're riding so I'm going to assume it is a fairly agile moto. With that said I did this quickly in google maps and it is missing a section of the Barlow road so I've had to break the route into two pieces.

First Estacade to the Barlow Road. Beware of 4610. I took it a couple years ago and there was one pretty good washout. Had to portage the bags and walk the bike through/around it. Other than that it was an amazing route.

Then Barlow Road to Madras

Ignore the stupid dead end leg on Elk Drive leaving Lake Simtustus. Not sure why it did that and it wouldn't let me get rid of it. The trail leaving Lake Simtustus along Willow creek is an awesome old railroad bed. It goes all the way into Madras, but the bridge is washed out towards the Madras end so you have to take a steep and rocky switchback up to Birch Lane. I take my DR350 on it but wouldn't take my Wee strom.

From Madras go to Ashwood, then south along Trout Creek all the way into Prineville. That should get you a good start.

Let me know when you're coming through and I might try to ride for a few hours in the Madras area.

Thanks for the information. I'll be riding my plated 2003 XR 400 on this trip. I'll be leaving the bigger bike at home. It looks like I'll be going through Madras on Satruday 6/23 in the mid to late morning. I'd be happy to have you ride along.

Sorry, won't be able to ride with you, that is the Western V-Strom gathering in The Dalles and I hope to be there. Post a ride report when you get back so we can enjoy your ride with you.

Question AJ, another ghost town question.

While riding from Hardman to Lonerock (Gillian County) I came upon this.

Because it was isolated it was sill intact for the most part.

By looking at the hardware I guess the town was well over 100 years old.

I then found this sign in the weeds.

Was there a town called Idea? I did a Google search and came up with nothing. Thanks

We were in *the* motel in Heppner (ahhh...) this morning as I first read your post,
and if the wind and rain weren't so freaking nasty rediculous,
we woulda went to check that out today on our way home.
But we took the "we wanna be home now" route home.....

I'd never heard of "Idea" before....AND, I've never yet been to Lonerock......
so, thanks yet again, Mort & XB12 !!
Looks like another adventure is now due.....but maybe after a short breather
