High Intensity LED Adventure Lighting by Vagabond Offroad

A little over a year ago, I designed a system for the 950/990 adventure. Although we had our challenges, we shipped many sets of lights to our ADVRider friends, and received many fine compliments.

Vagabond Offroad is now moving on to phase II! With much help from a "wise man", we have been able to secure funding for inventory, and start out on a plan that will have us building new insanely high quality, durable products for many years to come.

Our goal is to provide high quality, high value products that are custom fit to the application for which they were intended. As with the 950/990 product, there will be no posi-taps, no cutting or splicing of factory harnesses, and no permanent alterations to the original wiring.

Starting immediately, Vagabond Offroad will be suspending sales of all current products, and announcing the launch of several new products.

First among these is the new BMW 1200GS Adventure light (see post 2). This light was designed for those people that have the standard halogen BMW auxiliary lights, and want to replace them with a robust reliable light that provides significant down range lighting, and a significant improvement to conspicuity.

Next will be next generation KTM 950/990 lighting system (see post 3). This system will be similar to our exisiting version, but will come with improvements such as waterproof connectors that prevent polarity reversal. The new GenII Pyxis housing with improved cooling fin design, and better utilization of O-Rings for better water resistance. And additional switching options such as a dimming option, and push button options.

We will also be focusing heavily on coming out with a high fender version of these kits in Q1 of 2011.

In addition to these kits, we will be coming out with "dirt bike" oriented kits that will be designed for the trail/enduro/desert versions of popular dirt bikes to be used without the need to rewind or replace any electrical system components. Yep, no rewound stators! These systems are currently being tested by the Desert Assassins racing team.

Last on our current development list is a true plug and play kit for the standard 1200 GS that will be as easy to install as our 950/990 kit.

Stay tuned for developments!

Jake

1200 GS Adventure Plug and Play Kit

This light was designed as a replacement for folks that have had the stock BMW halogen Aux lights break as a result of riding their bike. My goal was to build a light that would use all stock BMW wiring, and stock mounts.

Here is what we came up with:

BMW stock high beam

BMW Stock High Beam w/ BMW Halogen Aux Lights

BMW Stock High Beam w/ Pyxis LED Aux Lights

Retail will be $550.00, and will include two lights, and all bracketry, and fasteners to mount to stock GS Adventure hangers. NO modification will be required to make these parts fit on a standard BMW GS Adventure that had the BMW Halogen Aux lights.

Starting February 14th, we will begin taking pre-orders for these kits, and pre-orders with continue for two weeks, or until the max 25 sets have been ordered. Pre-Orders will be available for a discounted price of $495.00.

Pre-Orders can be placed starting February 14th at www.vagabondoffroad.com.

I'm looking for a plug & play set of replacement lights for my Adventure, but I don't understand the pricing.

The lights appear to retail for $135 each on your wedsite, so that is $270. The non sale price is $550. What else is there to the GS Adventure kit that adds up to the remaining $280 if they are plug & play? I see the small brackets that you supply but they can't be anywhere near $280.

Manxman,

Thank you very much for the question, I was sure it would come up, just not sure when...

Over the last year, I sold roughly $11,500.00 worth of lights, brackets, and harnesses. That is great right? Well, it is until you realize that it cost me roughly $19,800.00 to build, package, and ship those products. Basically, I lost $8,300.00 building selling and shipping lights. Also, just to be clear, Those numbers do not include any salaries for me, or anyone else that worked on machining components, assembling lights, building harnesses, designing, etc., etc... To be clear, I am not complaining, I love doing this, and that is why I am continuing to go down this path, but I really need to make it financially viable if I am to make this business work.

Please feel free to ask any questions!

Thank you,

Jake

Why the different lights? In the full bike pic the lights are 1 bottom 2 top with screws on the face. In the blown up pic...1 top 2 bottom with no screws. And how are they tunable (per the website)? Statement with no info. Nice clean set-up and pics, just seems a little lacking in specifics on the site.

One of the things I love about my original Adventure lights is that I can run them all day. That way they make a triangle of lights with the headlight that really makes me stand out compared to just running the headlight.

Can I run these in the same manner without annoying the $%t out of my fellow motorists?

If not: How about a second option for the bracket and harness that will let me keep the originals and add the led lights? The switch housing is already prepared for it...

Looks like a great kit. Finally someone has gone through the trouble of making it truly plug and play.

About the pricing: I understand you need to make it be worthwhile to yourself. However, there seems to be a big difference in pricing for the KTM and BMW models, where the KTM seems to come with more hardware?

I guess I wasn't clear, I can't afford to continue selling the KTM light kit, or the standard Pyxis light with a pig tail at that price. Pricing for all lights will be going up to make this sustainable. The old pricing and lights are no longer available.

Similar to the BMW kits, the KTM kits will be re-introduced at a sustainable price within the next week or two.

Thanks,

Jake

Not to rag on you, but your product does not seem all the dissimilar to other I've seen in this very vendor forum, offering just as many lumens or more, and at substantially less cost. Maybe that cost will go up as well, but as a businessman, I'd suggest you re-examine your break even analysis. The answer to your enterprise clearly isn't going to be $500 + for 6 LED lights in 2 housings. That's just...well, again, I don't mean to beat you down, but its not gonna fly. You've got too much competition putting out reasonable products, standing behind them, giving more specs, and clearer communication.

Don't get me wrong, you can do well in the LED business if you've got a good competitive product at a price people can't turn down. But, you don't, yet.

Good luck with the endeavor.
