The Northern Route - Plains

The route goes from the west coast to central PA.

It is targeted at Adventure / Dual Sport bikes with optional sections that are harder.
It is on the scale of the Trans America Trail. Ride at your own risk.

This portion of the route goes from Sheridan WY to the eastern edge of Iowa.

The section to the west of here is - The Northern Route - Rockies - http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1039394

The section to the east of here is - The Northern Route - Midwest - http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1066579

As far as I know all roads are legal Public roads - Forest Service, county, state, etc. Off pavement as much as possible.

Here is the Garmin .gdb file - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...%20Release.gdb

Here is a standard GPX file - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...%20Release.gpx

Here is the documentation file - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...%20Release.doc

Note - the tracks are raw tracks containing LOTS of track points.
You may well have to filter these tracks down for some units.

Nice looking tracks

Thanks for sharing your work. You have done a great job putting this together. I think the July/ August looks like my best shot at a portion of this if I time it to Bonniville.

Midwest

When I get the Midwest section cleaned up it will include eastward through Ohio.

Yeah, I'm even looking after you Buckeye's!

Might be a month or two for that to happen, and I'm still working on that section a BUNCH this year.

I have a route done, but not happy with parts of it.

Eastern Illinois isn't good, and eastern Indiana either.

The alt loop around Michigan's Upper Peninsula is lacking a bunch of sections. Got 2/3s of UP done and less that 1/4 of Lower Peninsula.

So... riding to do. Of course, it's supposed to be -20 tonight here.... BRRR!

Gas at Ponca NE

Based upon feedback from other inmates I've updated the files to reflect gas availability at Ponca NE.

The waypoint has been changed as well as the gas distances in the documentation.

Very nice! We will be riding the DAKal loop in Sept 2015 and will add some of your section over to Devil's Tower to our adventure. Thanks for sharing the GPS info!

NorthernTraveler - Thanks for all the work and effort you have put into this. I know how involved it is to make short, 150 mile or so, tracks. I can't imagine what it took to tackle something of this scale.

I did get an opportunity to ride some of this this weekend. I've lived in this area 4 years now and you've found some treasures that I didn't know about. I did the Burlington spur (NR19IA3z) out to the main route (NR19IA3) then the Ft. Madison spur (ZT0 Iowa).

Some feedback for you: IA3 and IA3z were both spot on. Lots of entertaining gravel and some interesting scenery, or at least as good as can be expected for traveling through farmland. There are a few opportunities to add some level B dirt roads with at least one creek crossing. If you'd like, I can go back out and get the tracks to add as alternative routes.

My main goal was to proof ride ZT0 Iowa for you. I did find 3 issues with that. The first issue is on Eagle Drive between Bethel Rock Av and Hwy 98 there is a small bridge/culvert being replaced. From the looks of how the work is progressing, I would expect this to not be a problem in another month or two. It is easy to route around. The next two issues go hand in hand. There are two bridges, one just after the alternate (ZT0a) begins and the other just before they join back together, that are no longer open to vehicular traffic. I am guessing that you suspected as much and thus the fortuitously placed alternate route.

All in all, a terrific job! Thanks again. If there is anything I can help with on this, let me know.

'B' roads

Yeah, I originally was going to use a bunch of 'B' roads, but then after trying to ride some of them in the rain I decided that was NOT a good idea.

B roads for alts? Yep. The main route? Nope.

I actually originally did a whole different route across southern Iowa, but based upon recommendations from locals I mapped a whole more southerly route on the fly that I ended up using. I didn't include the original route in the release as it would be just too busy. I really liked the Loess hills, so I extended the route both north and south along them as far as I could.

My original route across Iowa is the stuff across northern Iowa. The Driftless area in the NE part of the state is really nice and I wanted to use it. The northwest part of the state is not real exciting, hence the route across the southern part.

I'm about to release the next segment to the east - Midwest - and for now it continues eastward from Muscatine. In a month or two I'll release Midwest V2 which will have release V1 PLUS a loop up and around the Upper Peninsula starting near Decora IA and ending in western Ohio.

The preferred route then will be across southern Iowa, up the eastern edge, across SE MN, across WI, across MI UP, down MI LP, down eastern OH. Great stuff most of the way.

BTW - glad you enjoyed the route.

NorthernTraveler,

Just wanted to thank you again for all the work you've put into the Northern Route.

I'm leaving June 1st to "Wiggle My Way North" to Inuvik, NWT. I'll be riding mostly non pavement all the way to Quesnel, BC. Of course I'll be using a lot of your tracks through WY, MT & ID.

But, before I leave for the North country, my wife & I are doing a lap across MN, The Upper Peninsula & down the west coast of MI next week. We'll wave as we cross the Upper Peninsula

Cheers
