LC8 Adventure Second Fan Install

Fan kit is not designed to cool the bike vitual... It actually has to be mounted for it to work... Haha. I thought the plug disconnect was going to be difficult, but it was easy. And I made a simple tool out of an elongated coat hanger with a neptune forked type end to push the new plug connector in. And it worked great ( in only 3 tries).

I'd recommend getting the cooler thermo if you haven't already. Oh yeah, make sure you rotate the rad. hose clamp away from the fan blades once fan is installed. Or you'll hear the familiar sound of " playing cards off the spokes".

You need to get that Aux. fan project done so you can immediately buy your next awesome KTM add on. So hurry...

An alternative to adding fans etc is to try a product called "waterwetter". It is said to reduce coolent temperature by improving thermal transfer between the coolant and other surfaces by eliminating microbubbles that act as insulators. I used this on an old motorhome that always ran hot. I sold it before i could verify how good it worked but other old RV owners claimed that it worked well.

I've used water wetter for years and it doesn't begin to approach the positive benefits of having the second fan on the big girl.

Been there, done that, have two fans.

Same here. I put water wetter in my car and 990; maybe it helps but I can't tell the difference.

So ... been there, done that, and yesterday ordered my secon fan.

I installed a fan shroud on the Head2wind kit, just ordered the same shroud as the other side. It is easy to modify and fits perfectly, it redirects the hot air toward the outside beautifully. Looks pretty factory to me as well. Only cost me about $6 and 15 minutes of my time.

I haven't had my 990 long enough and in warm enough weather to get fan running much, but it looks like I will need to add a second fan to the growing list of upgrades.

There are guys using Evans here at the shop that are getting as much as 28 degrees F cooler (digital coolant gauges) which is a lot

EDIT: I would not recommend Evans Coolants at this point as it is epxenisve (+$40/gallon) and your entire system musty be flushed with it to remove the old coolant. Also leaks past water pump seals & head gaskets on customer bikes. Smells bad. Emergency top-ups can only be with Evans, not water or coolant commonly available

of course I have the H2W 2nd fan kit & the lower thermostat on my bike really works to keep the temps down, and quickly. Fans go off pretty soon after coming on compared to one fan where it might run for minutes depending on just how hot (& slow-going) things are

I'm in the UK and I've just fitted a second fan, an OEM one from another 950. I have had some overheating issues when abroad last year in hot conditions and slow moving traffic in Poland, Austria and Italy. I took the bike into a dealers when in Austria and they reckoned it was an air lock. After raising the front and burping the system; cleaning the rad fins with compressed air the bike still overheated in Italy.

I'm going to Morocco later on this year and I've incorporated a switch into the fan install so I can flick it on and off as and when required.

I glued foam to the fan where it would come into contact with the radiator.



Also used foam and cork type washers for the ties.



I had to trim a little of the fan shroud as it was interferring with the radiator hose.



Fan in place.



Took power source from my new aux fuse box install.



Put an extra relay in the power source to the fan.



Switch wired and fitted.

I just received my rally fan kit from AdvMachines, just wanted to add that Ken is an awesome guy, they did not ship to Singapore and after an email request and a verified PayPal account he was kind enough to add the ability to ship to Singapore. Also the package arrived and they had short shipped the 200F switch, couple of emails later Ken replied to apologise for the overlook and inform that the switch will be sent to me with tracking ASAP.
The kit is really well made and of top quality, the 4" spal fan unites to the bracket flawlessly and the install is a breeze, less than 15mins.
Did not have to rig up any special coat hanger tools, with patience as in the instructions you wil be able to line up and clip in the power leads. (or have the wife or kids handy for it, have a light to check if completely clipped in and it's done)
I also took the time to add some silicone grease to the terminals of the leads prior to installation for longevity of the electrical connections. (peace of mind against water and corrosion)
Big thank you to Ken @ AdvMachines for being a top guy and producing such a simple and well made product worth it's weight in gold. Can't wait to receive the switch to complete the setup which hopefully will solve my heat woes on my adv.
