Neutral position sensor needs adjustment

I have a 990 with few miles, and I could use some help on this issue.

The neutral light will only work if I maintain a little upward pressure on the gear shift lever. Otherwise, even though the bike is in neutral gear (it won't move with the engine running), the neutral light goes off.

Not a big problem while riding, but certainly an inconvenience when starting the bike up and letting it warm up, as with the side stand down, the engine will not start (or stay on) if the neutral light is not on.

I read through the forum, and I followed the advice of pulling out the gear shift sensor and cleaning it. It was not dirty. There was no change.

Someone mentioned that such a problem may be mechanical rather than electric, and that is what I suspect as well. This inmate said it was an “inside engine job” adjustment.

1) Does anyone know what such mechanical (inside engine job) adjustment entails?
2) Is there a service manual that would explain it?

Any help is appreciated as my KMT dealer went bust, and so I am somewhat left to my own devices . . . and your priceless assistance, of course.

Thank you in advance,

Martin0496.

Unsure if this is the same issue on the thread i am linking you to but it sounds it from my speed read but CP Modem is most likely correct.

Are these similar to your problem?

Hopefully that helps.

Sorry BLUE, I nuked my last post after reading yours. This looks like it may be worth a try. In fact, I added the link you provided to the HOW in the Wisdom of the Forum section. If it doesn't work for martin, I'll re-post my advice and help him find a service manual if necessary. Shouldn't be happening on a new bike, at any rate.

So long as he has options is what matters.

My 2007 se has the identical issue. I get a nice green wink as I shift to second but no nuetral light now for several thousand miles. Mine started acting up one day once the engine was hot, then quit showing neutral at all within a few days.

Less annoying though since the sidestand switch has been removed. I tried a new switch already, but now I'll try stretching those springs a tad. It shifts perfectly otherwise, so the shift drum has to be in the right place.

Tried stretching the springs today but to no avail. May try new pins but I'm not optimistic.
