But there will probably be a bypass route to the south that takes in some of Ocala NF and crosses the river at Astor where it will rejoin the main route, if that's the only day available. Taking the ferry is a nice break though and there's some fun dirt soon after you're on the east side of the river, so I'd recommend taking it.

Recap and Moving North

Ok, to recap... This route is being extracted from the mind of someone (Bill) who knows all the dirt between Florida and Tennessee, to be put down in a form that can be reproduced. IE, maps and GPS routes. This has required the help and work of one of our friends (Day13).

Well, shortly after our expedition through GA, Day13 was diagnosed with cancer in his throat. Not only do we rely on Day13 to handle all the GPS stuff, but he does all of the video too. The rest of us old guys are as you can guess, old school . Barely able to handle the computer.

So our buddy Day13, has had two operations and the Doctors were ready to start his radition and chemo therapy, so a plan was devised. To take Day13 to the North Carolina mountains for one last ride before his long ordeal of battling off his current challenge in life.

At the sametime this would give us a chance to run some of the last segments of the route from Florida to Tennessee and to the TAT, on as much dirt as possible. To lend confidence to the roads, Bill road much of it two up on a KLR.

As it turned out, someone knows someone, who's sister, has a brother in law, whose mother has a friend that lives next door to a guy that has a grandmother that has a house in the North Carolina mountains. So the trip was set. Here are some pictures of this past weekend's trip.

Did I mention, it was cool up in the mountains versus back home of 100 + smoke from all the fires??

Stop for a nice break

Day13 is on the right

Sweet Water crossing

Great time, and Day13 got some great memories and trails to look forward to while fighting his battle. He was able to get 57 video files of this trip and plans to get them up as he recovers.

Cheers

Good job Rich. Thanks for posting this. Big thanks to Bill and Colette for their wonderful hospitality and of course AWESOME riding. Another homerun, for sure. Also a great way to send our boy Sam (James Coburn) off to CO for the summer. I can't tell you what it means to have friends like this, especially in times of trial and uncertainty. This past weekend will definitely help get me through this rough section ahead. Thanks guys.

Dave

Yep that's me. I have the Hobie 33 named KAOS. You solved the puzzle. That kite surfing stuff requires the ability to chew gum and walk at the same time...a little out of my league...

It was a great time and a stroke of good fortune the whole plan came together at the last minute (about a day and a half), almost as though it was meant to be. Riding with you guys is always fun but the fact we could sneak Dave out for his last one in awhile made it even more special.

There are a few sections of video I'm really looking forward to seeing.

Grew up in Salt Springs like five minutes from there. Parents house still there. Now I'm like 30 minutes from there. Some good riding around there, but man can it get sandy.

Boy are you right about the sand. We refer to all the dirt roads here as light, medium or heavy sand.
