Alaska in 6 easy installments...
OK. I have been wanting to plan an AK trip for years but can never find the time to do it. Sound familiar? 2-3 weeks is totally not going to happen with my new job, but a bunch of 3-4 day weekends IS legit. Nothing a couple airplane tickets can't fix.
Having friends in the Bay Area and Seattle should help. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the bike to get back. Maybe just another bunch of weekenders to come back another way... So far, I have blocked out a couple 4 day weekends to get from San Diego to the Bay Area and Bay Area to Seattle. I would like to camp the whole way and hit as much easy dirt as possible to keep it an adventure. The Central Coast of CA is a total mystery to me. I have never been through there, but have always wanted to. I am looking for campground suggestions along the way. Good ones. Bad campgrounds tend to ruin the experience for me. Segment 1 Preliminary Itinerary: San Diego to Santa Barbara-ish Santa Barbara to Big Sur Big Sur to Berkeley I found this list for the Padre National Forest: Padre Campgrounds Night 1: The plan is to stay mainly coastal, but this road looks pretty interesting. Does anyone know if this campground area can be accessed from Santa Barbara? Night 2: This area looks cool. I have seen a bunch of pictures of people climbing on Plaskett Rock and wanted to check it out. Is Forest Route 20S05, or something similar, open for riding? That looks pretty sweet. Night 3: My brother's floor in Bezerkly. Flight out in the morning for work.Segment to should be a couple weeks later and planning will start as it gets closer. Please let me know of anything to be sure not to miss on the way.

You can't even get a week off?
Spending alot of money flying up there. Better then nothing though.

I might be able to get one week off for the northern most sections, but that's about it. New job... Crunch time is over the summer and by the time we meet our deadline, it will be too late for AK.

Transport your bike to AK?
There was a listing on the Dayton, OH Craigslist yesterday for a guy that had a 35' trailer and was going to fill it with bikes and go to Alaska in July. He takes your bike to Anchorage, you fly to Anchorage, and get your bike and ride it for a week. He was charging $1100 to take your bike to Anchorage and bring it back, one week later, to Dayton or to you if you happened to be somewhere along his route. He said your bike would be fully insured.
No, I'm not him nor do I know him, nor is this an endorsement of his services or a testimonial as to whether you can trust him! Just an advertisement seen that I thought was pursuant to the thread. |

Thanks for the heads up dreemrider. That actually sounds pretty interesting. Do you have contact info? I would be psyched if I could actually just get it there one way then do the trip back.
