is this r/100 worth $3600.00?

78, two owner bike. seller claims it needs nothing. service records, new tires, battery, etc. he bought it from the original owner in 1997. second owner had the whole bike professionally re-painted with bmw factory black metallic including the lufmeister because he did not like the white fairing. hand applied pin stripes. supposed to be actual miles. is that upper end pricing on a r100? anything i should look for tomorrow when i go to see/buy it?
thanks

Is it worth it using conventional pricing methods - probably not, as it will be hard to get your money out of it if you sell. That said, if you are into what looks to be an absoutely turn key, pristine as new ride that you will keep and fondle and plish and be proud of forever, then yes.

Look at it this way, its far less than half the cost of a new middle weight bike of any brand so if you have the money and it makes you happy, why not?

As far as what to look for, pages and pages exist on that, but for sure check out service records and such.

YMMV.

It's worth what you'd pay...and for something in that good of condition, I'd say yeah. That's a fairly good price. You may be able to do better but I wouldn't cry over that price.

i'm not much into the fairing, so that will have to go. the headlight bucket and turn signal stalks are behind it. a set of euro spec bars and i'd say i'll be set.

Assuming the bike is as advertised, it's a fair price. I'd try to offer 10% less.

Especially, if the paint is as "brown" as is appears.

I had an R80/7 that color and named her "Brun-Hilda"; polished (which mine never was) it looks kinda cool in an weird utilitarian kind of way.

The $3600 bothers me because thats about top dollar for that bike but....

If you can live with the fairing (That is way heavy and has zero resale value.) and you just love the rest of the bike. If it truly "Needs Nothing". If the paperwork and records check out and you can refrain from modifying the bike to Hell... If you intend to keep it long term and maintain it in it's current condition...

Then yeah, it's a good buy because its not easy or cheap to put a bike into that condition and the maintenance records make a huge difference.

Personally? At that price point I'd be looking for a clean RS or RT and I'd be willing to spend a little more money if necessary. Oh... And I hate brown BMW's and that bikes BROWN.

It looks like everything is all there and right, but $3600 for a /7 ....might be little bit on the hight end.
As other people mentioned an older bike only worth what you think it worth.

The bike looks exceptionally clean. I'd dicker, but pay close to that.

FWIW, the fairing is a Windjammer, not a Luftmeister.

By the time I'm done with my "Free" 78 /7 I'll have a whole lot more into it than that.

Before paying that I'd find a good airhead mechanic to give it a quick going over to make sure it's as advertized. Pay close attention to the rear splines.

I like that color but that's just me.

Things to look for
Make sure the brake rotor isn't worn too deep
The master cylinder isn't leaking (under the tank)
Peek IN the tank and look for anything that looks like corrosion
Check the bags carefully. When they are that old the latches start to crap out. Also check for cracks.

78's had flat top carbs so it might have some performance mods (s models had larger carbs that look like those carbs).

Look close at the push rod tubes for seepage, around the pan too.

Not sure whar else to look for...

you know, i don't think it is. no matter how "perfect", someone claims their bike is, its not. the seller is really proud of it and won't budge a dollar. if i have to spend even a few hundred on it, i'm topping the $4k mark. think i'll pass on it.

Of course

Short answer, Yes. A new version of it goes for 20K. They don't make them like that anymore. Condition, all important, go for it.
