Love the little 'thought bubbles' you snuck in there.

Now where were we...?

Ah, yes...plunking along on what we think might be the 'Monkey Trail' we come out of some of the best riding so far and onto the pavement. Still in search of more dirt, coffee and breakfast we quickly dive back off the main road onto a dirt section that I automatically surmise must be part of the old 'road' system. This, of course, is based on absolutely nothing.

Not too far into the woods we hear the unmistakable sounds of the howler monkeys and take a few moments to find them...

...it's not too difficult.

...

This keeps us entertained for a while before we eventually move on...

The riding sucks...

...

The trail dumps us onto a well maintained gravel road...

...and into some sort of condo complex where we need to forget how to read signs. We quitely pass through unnoticed and make our way out the other side.

"Hmmmmm...this is all looking very familiar..."

Yep. Sure enough, the hotel with the strip of asphalt in front goes by. We've gone full circle back into Tamarindo!

"Let's find some coffee and breakfast and figger out how to get out of here."

We find a spot and park the bikes...

...find a table outside...and order some vittles.

While we wait Dave explores the 'boardwalk'...

There's a little surf school that's set up shop for the day.

Breakfast shows up...

...the shopkeeper next door opens up and hangs up her wares while we eat...

Meanwhile, we've heard a rather overpowering voice in the street and manage to get a glimpse of its source before she disappears down the street.

Coffee and breakfast finished we head back out to the bikes...

...just as the local canstables roll by...

As luck would have it, just about the time we get across the street to the bikes, Mandy and her entourage stroll up...

We chat it up for awhile. They've moved here recently. From Michigan, maybe? Help me out here, whizzer...

Interesting outlook on things. Makes one think.

She shows us her tats...

...and does the pose with the bike...

She's a hoot! Ain't nothin' gettin' in her way!

The whole clan...

...L-R daughter, daughter's b/f, Mandy's SO, Michael Trout and Mandy. Wonder how things are going for them today...

Meeting and getting the opportunity to talk to the whole clan is a refreshing highlight of our trip but we need to move on.

...the road out of town we missed the first time around is found...

As I dream of Costa Rican real estate I think, "It's only a few hours into the day but it's been a day full of pleasant surprises..."

"Whoa! What's this?"

A photo op, that's what!

...

What can I say? We're easily entertained.

Moving along...

"So what if the bridge is closed? Don't be a Sally. Just ride through the river."

"...this looks interesting..."

...

Beyond the puddle, the vegetation is trying to reclaim the roadway. We weave through the mass and come out at a small opening where we can see a tent and a small house.

As we slow down and consider turning around, we're waved in by a local...

...who remains on his hammock while we have a look around.

As the young boy shows us around, through a conversation of broken English and even worse Spanish (on our part), we gather they are the caretakers...

...they live in the tent and this is the kitchen.

It's a simple life - at least in all appearances to us foreigners. Probably tougher than it appears.

Of course, the view sucks...

After our little tour we sneak a tip onto the table before we gear up and hit the road.

Fun little visit.

We make our way back out to the main road...

...and point our front wheels down the coast...

A bit further down the road we poke out at a beach...

...quick look around...kinda full so we keep going...

It's starting to heat up, traffic is heavy and the dust is thick...

...somehow Dave ends up in the back eating dust and expressing his delight...

Kinda different 'leading' when you have absolutely no clue where you are and you can't read any signs that may appear. How'd I end up up here?

We find another beach that isn't full of cars...

The artsy attempt...

"Dang. I've got to get SCS down here..."

...pretty sure she'd approve...

...not so sure about this, though...

Speaking of SCS, I decide to do a little shopping...

...even with the limited selection I manage to find a couple of keepers to bring home...

Don't look like much but they were a big hit.

Bringing my final selection to the register, we head back to the bikes and down the road...

You can't swing a dead cat around these parts without hitting a dog...

...not that I would do that with a cat. Or a monkey for that matter.

Prolly my favorite road sign.

ATCRGATT...

At this cross road we conclude we're a bit turned around. Sun is high, can't see the water...which way is south?

"This might be fun..."

...you have no idea how much fun...

Of course, I had to switch over to stills just before this happened.

Yes, he's fine. Maybe 7 years bad luck with the broken mirror but at least he's ok.

Maybe whizzer got some helmet-cam footage.

Before we leave the beach I get the product shoot out of the way for Seal Line...

BTW, great bag for this kind of touring. That, and a couple of Rok-Straps and you're good to go.

Fun riding out there. A bit like riding the ice - keep the weight on the front as best you can in the turns. Of course, the loose stuff requires a totally different technique...

After way too much fun and before someone tells us we shouldn't have done that we hit the road...

...

Continuing down the coast of the Nicoyan...

...

"Wonder what the deal is with that place..."

Appears abandoned.

"Think it's really a dead end or just good riding between a couple of well maintained roads....?"

"Let's find out."

Yep. Dead end.

A short back track and we're on the main road again...

...

It's hotter than two mice in a wool sock...

...even little campers are seeking shelter from the sun...

My mind wanders... "I could deal with a little place like that down here..."

"...or how about this place...?"

...

Whizzer gets all fancy with his Latin description of the tree...

Not too far down the road...

...we find a little village...

...and stop for a little break...

The shade along the beach is a welcome relief. We hang out a while and watch the fishermen bring in their boats...

...and check out the local bimbos...

You knew that was coming.

We wander over to where they're taking their catch...

"What have we got here...?"

The next cooler over holds even more yummy goodness...

Doesn't get any fresher than that!

Of course, while we're wandering around, the locals are enjoying the freak show that we are.

We head back over to the shade to enjoy our quickly melting ice creams...

More fishermen are returning with their catch...

...we strike up a conversation...

...the catch and the tools of the trade...

These guys are old school.

We eventually find another side road...

...that leads to another beach...

...SCS would eat this up!

...

Before we leave I send a message home...

As Rad would say, I haven't remained married 27+ years by accident. In reality, I don't understand it either.

Back on the road...

...

Just in case you want to try and follow along on a map...

On one of our beach exits - I honestly can't remember which one - we run into an ADVer and his family from Canada. BikeEffects(?) - my notes are a bit sketchy. Sorry. Got anything, Whizzer? We chat it up a bit before moving on. Small world.

Another beach...

...a little shade time...

Rolling again, traffic is picking up...

...

...

...

...

The road tucks into the shade for a bit where we have some fun...

...

You bet I did!

The 'cool' shade is welcomed...

...though it doesn't last for long.

Navigational adjustments...

...high speed passes...

...riding gear tests...

No. We're not involved. Just get to witness it.

Nice Job

Great ride report. It brought back a lot of memories about what I enjoy so much about Costa Rica.

I felt like I was there. Thanks for posting.

Pretty sure I already posted it in there quite awhile ago.

Thank you everyone for the kind comments.

Now, if I can't just get day 5 wrapped up...

Quite honestly it was a fantastic day that I never wanted to end.

Not really wanting to find out, we move along...

Besides, we need gas.

Someone who cares can tell me how much that works out to be per gallon.

We fuel up and check out the local culture while rehydrating...

These three wait outside for the two that ran in...

Meanwhile, I wonder why I have so much crap...

Nice little XT...

While we're cooling off, a dood from Toronto walks over and talks bikes. He's an HD guy. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Have a sneaky suspicion he was shopping for a dual sport this past summer.

We hang out a bit longer, sucking up the water, taking in the sights...

...before we get back on the road.

It's been a while since we had any real food. There was that ice cream about 6 beaches ago but that's kinda worn off. We're in search of lunch. Late lunch.

Rolling past a prospect, we turn around and check it out. They may serve food...

That giant 'Restaurante' is the clue.

Late mid-afternoon. It's been a long, hot, dusty day. It's about 3 hours past my normal 2 hour feeding. We walk in the door and Michele greets us like we're old friends.

I'll try and keep him out of trouble

We're starving and thirsty.

We talk food. We talk drink. We ask about camping.

Without missing a beat she points over to the ocean and some palm trees out the back door and says, "Right over there. You'll be fine."

We take about .2 seconds to think about it and order some beers. We're home!

Before we get too settled in she points us around to the path to the beach...

Glad we got that part done sooner rather than later.

Bikes parked...

"I think I've died and gone to heaven!"

...we unload...

...kick off the boots...

"ahhhh..."

Time to celebrate another fantastic day!

...

While we eat we grill Michele on the move to Costa Rica and the whole transition...

Dang!

...

We have a friend...

...

Our better judgement says we should set up our tents before it gets dark...

This place does not suck.

...

...

Camp set up we take advantage of the beach and the outdoor shower. There's quite an undertow.

...

Road dust off, it's back inside, which is really half outside...

Into the night we eat, have a few beers and talk with our new friends Michele and her SO, Terry...

...while the music plays in the background...

Not sure why but that one sticks out even to this day.

Whizzer wins the bet with his bar trick...

Eventually we move out on the beach where the world's problems can best be solved...

...around a fire.

Finally, we call it a night, but not before Terry promises to deliver coffee in the morning.

Climbing into my tent I note the dust has made my black tank panniers the same color as my Tilley...

As I quickly drift off, "Dang! What a fantastic day..."
