Día siete continued...

Late start but who cares? While I have could easily been convinced to just hang out in Mal Pais another day, riding motorcycles and seeing more of the country isn't a a bad gig either...

...

...

...

Again, they aren't riding horses just for fun.

Little place for sale...

...

Whizzer is upstaged on a bridge crossing...

...

The sole purpose of this video is to lure SCS down here.

Back on the road we're closing in on Moctezuma...

...we make our way through the downtown...

Then to the beach...

...

Hanging around taking in the sights we talk about grabbing some lunch...

...then find a place back in town over looking another beach...

...

The bikes are parked in view and we keep an eye on them here...

...at least until lunch arrives!

So far this is the only place I've been concerned about our gear or bikes. Just a vibe.

Tummys full, we head back to the bikes...

...and roll out of town...

Leaving Moctezuma...

...somewhere along the way we make a fuel stop. This rig is at the pump next to us...

I wander over and admire the kid's handiwork. He's very proud of his bike as he should be. Reminds me of kids back home taking pride in their first cars and hotrodding them up a bit.

Before we leave the kid rips out of the station with it enjoying the fact that it's a high strung two-stroke.

Today was billed as a suck day of riding.

Whizzer was down this way a year or so ago and had said the route they had taken over to the ferry wasn't anything to write home about.

Cleary, they didn't have me along to help get them lost.

In the middle of nowhere - I mean nowhere - We find a little tienda...

...and ask directions. Or more accurately, where are we?

...

My Spanish isn't very good but I believe he says, “See this oven right here? You're in it.”

We do the only thing that makes any sense...

...we get ice cream.

If I remember it right...we said we had some time to kill before catching the ferry, so we decided to take the indirect route to get there. We got totally lost....which isn't a bad thing mind you.

I found this scene funny when I came around the corner:

...

Seemed like they knew something that we didn't, and were just waiting for some weary travelers to come along and expire right there. They'll clean up the mess...

That's a vulture in my ornithology book. But since I don't have one of those really, could be something else.

Is that water deeper than I'm thinking????

Oh yeah, GPS maps....

You have a Garmin right? If so then you can get good free (and I do mean FREE not pirated!) maps here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/O...entral_America

I wouldn't recommend using it for any sort of routing, especially in a place like costa rica, but very useful in figuring out where you are in relation to towns and such.

Finishing up our ice cream...

...while the dog finishes up his nap, we get back on the road...

...

...

...

A quick little stop for a water break...

...

...

...

...

...

Whoever is in the back is eating some earth...

...

...

Traffic is stopped for us...

...iguanas watch us motor by...

...our spectactular little sashay has taken us to a place closer to where we left than where we're going...

We head towards Paquera...

Getting to be time to start looking we briefly pull up...

...short meeting... "This isn't going to help the number for our dollar cost averaging of the lodging." :klr so we move on...

...

Not too far up the road we find a spot. Paquera, I believe.

Through a conversation of broken Spanglish we manage to get checked in. $28. Divided by 2. The home office will be proud! The money we save we invest in liquid assets...

...covered in dust and grime we get the lame photo shoot out of the way...

...collect our supplies...

...and head to our luxurious accomodations...

...

Norman Rockwell inspired I get the self portrait before cleaning up for dinner...

With our week old Sunday best on, we head back over for some dinner. And maybe a beer...

During check in the owner was unnecessarily apologetic about his English. We tried to assure him it is much better than our Spanish but apparently he doesn't buy it.

We grab a table and happen to notice a young lady sitting nearby. Time to take our order, she comes over speaking English to get us through it. Once our order is taken she heads back home.

Really no need to do it, the owner goes way out of his way to provide excellent service!

Dinner arrives...

...we talk about the day.

At some point a crowd 4 or 5 of American tourists bumbles in. We chat. Recommend whatever we had and have desert...

After a fantastic dinner, we make our way back to the room. With an assortment of beds to choose from I grab the one on the floor...

Día siete complete, I sleep like a baby.

Until about 2am...maybe earlier, which begins día ocho...

Having gone to bed fairly early after some studying of the map I've got my 5 hours or so.

Evenually moving around, we look for the hotspot...

...take a stroll around...

...

...before we open the restaurant for coffee at 5:50.

The interpreter apparently only works the nightshift so we're on our own for breakfast which really isn't a problem. We been bobbing around the country for over a week now and haven't starved to death yet.

Breakfast...

...and a darned good one, at that!

After breakfast we struggle through a conversation with the owner, again, apologetic for his English with no reason to be.

Back to the room we collect our gear and hit the road...

We don't get very far before our first stop...

Amazing machines...

...card in at the top, colones out the bottom!

Money in our pockets, back on the bikes...

...now we're really ready to roll.

We heading to the ferry. No idea how far it is, what time it leaves or anything really...

The one thing we do know is that following this bus...

...as it belches out black smoke...

...on this nice twisty road sucks.

Whizzerwheel devises a plan to remedy this...

Shortly after our death defying act we reach the ferry, stumble through the ticket purchasing procedure...

...

...and park over to the side to wait as directed...

...

...

Knowing we've made our second third goal of the day, all we have to do is wait.

And watch...

...

Dave signals his place in line...

Thankfully, it's a nice cool morning...

...

What's goal 1 & 2 you say?

1: coffee

2. money

"Glad I have a bike to tote my pack that is that big around the country..."

Finally our turn...

...we make our way onto the boat...

...strip off our gear...

and head up to the passenger deck...

...

Safely aboard Unsinkable II...

...we check out the vessel...

Seeing the tidy fleet tied off at the bottom of the harbor instills boatloads of confidence.

We scan the boat for floatation devices...

...

Lifejacket drill completed, key turned in the ignition...

...we get underway...

Another beautiful day...

...

...

Always helpful, Dave points out to the wandering passengers which way the stairs go...

Down.

...

At the snack bar I wonder if they have pills for this...

...

More than an hour has passed as we approach Puntarenas...

We start jockeying for position to get back down to the bikes...

...

Back on our bikes...

...we pull into port...

...and prepare to disembark...

Trying to get as many nautical terms in here as I can.

Off the boat, we carefully weave our way through the crowd...

...and find a spot to regroup...

Ricky's looks good...

Meet Ricky Ricardo...

Nope. Not that Ricky Ricardo.

After talking with Ricky awhile, we order some empanadas...

...and something to drink...

...

Snack time over we gear up and get back on the road...

We've got more exploring to do...

Somebody...took it upon themselves to perform an impromptu USCG inspection of the flotation (device) on board:

Passing with flying colors...the stamp of approval is affixed

Shiver me timbers....land ahoy!

Safely off the ferry, EvilClown celebrates with his own empanada...

While attracting the attention of one of the local Muchachas

Ferry crossing and snack time out of the way...

...we pick our way through the streets of Puntarenas...

...interesting...

It's Sunday...

...people are out...

...even a few riders...

Biggest bikes we've seen since arriving...

Somewhere along the way out of town I even spot a 990. There's a bit of a bike scene here.

Before we get too far we have one more stop to make...

That out of the way, we're on a mission...

Whizzer tells me there's this bridge...

...where the crocodiles live...

...so I follow him...

The GoPro's got to be an odd sight for the average Costa Rican...

...once they get past the riding gear, that is.

We're following the coastline...

...and a smelly diesel...

...

Not the kind of riding we've gotten used to over the last few days...

Traffic jam...

Ahhhhh...no wonder. These guys are making their way around the country with their paving machine wrecking all the good riding...

...and Dave's not too happy about it...

...

We finally arrive...

...park the bikes...

...and go have a looksie...

These guys are rather large...

...some at least 15 feet...

...and they're everywhere...

Those aren't just logs along the banking over there!

We look around for a meat case with a chicken or something we can toss down there...

Nothing.

That might be entertaining to watch.

Oh, well. Show over, we make our way back to the bikes...

...and spot this iguana...

...he's about 4 feet long. Biggest one we've seen so far.

Quick stop inside for something to drink...

...then back out to climb on the bikes...

...wondering what this tour might be like from a bus.

Don't know about Dave, but I'm thinking the pavement's getting old...

...

...apparently, he agrees...

...

...past the old school bus turned bridge deck...

...we head up the side of a mountain...

...

...it's steeper than a cow's face and the loose clay is a bit 'live'...

...

...little break...

...take a look around...

...across the valley we see the mirror image of the road we're on. The switchbacks are steeper than they appear...

Moving ahead we eventually meet the end of the trail for us...

...and make our way back down the mountain...

...

At the bottom, near the school bus bridge, we had spotted a soda sign. We pull in thinking we'll see if they can tell us whether or not there's a road that goes all the way through.

Turns out the sign is old and this is not a soda. It's a residence. They're having a Sunday afternoon family get together. No problem, though. They're still willing to help us out. All of them.

Dave whips out the map and they go at it...for at least 15-20 minutes it seems. Hanging by the bike, clapping my hands so he knows where I am, I just kind of watch the pandemonium unfold as they each take turns trying to figure out what we're saying and what exactly the map is depicting.

I think Dave even finally stands back to watch...

Fun stuff.

We eventually get something helpful out of all of it and say our farewells and ride back out past the bus bridge...

...thinking they'll now have stories to tell for at least a little while.
