We're heading deeper up into the mountains...

...finding a fork in the road we take it...

Not even 10 minutes into the day we're stuck in traffic...

Being on vacation, we're in a hurry...

...sensing approval from the cowboys...

...we weave our way through...

...to the open highway.

Following the River Blanco, the open highway takes us further into the valley...

Taking the lead, Whizzerwheel rides ahead into the postcard...

...where I wonder when the last time a wheel has been here.

It's like traveling back in time to the old farm roads of New England which are now rutted, overgrown, unmaintained woods trails.

...

Another bridge...

...doesn't collapse.

Eventually, we stop and have a look around...

...the river is clean and the hillsides are steep...

Artsy tree bark shot...

...and narrow river crossings...

...with rocky approaches...

Dave wanders out onto the bridge...

...and says something about how narrow it is.

We decide to take the alternate route...

This stuff puts the Golden Boys to the test...

It's been 14 years since we've been there, but your ride report inspired me to have pintos gallos for dinner tonight.

I think we stayed at the same place with the paper thin walls back then. We were in a room over the dining room and a band had set up for some sort of party. After an hour or two of music, I spent 20 minutes with the phrase book figuring out how to ask for a new room, because ours was too noisy.

I made my way to the front desk, and regurgitated the Spanish I'd memorized to the nice young lady there, and she said, "Oh, I'm sorry, let me get you moved right away."

Thanks for a great trip down memory lane!

You're probably all concerned that we might be lost....

Nope...not yet.

The crossing successfully behind us...

...we continue on...

...

As remote as this is, there are still overhead utilities...

...at least for a while...

...

Between these two images you may get an idea of how steep the terrain is...

The loose rock challenges the tires and riders. As the trail finally deminishes we decide to head back...

No matter how far away from civilization there is always someone.

Back at our crossing, it's old hat now...

...

We have a closer look at the farms on the way out...

...a couple of workers are out now...

...

...

...

The family transportation...

...

...

Eventually, we make it back to a village...

...

...

...

...and take a little break...

...locals and tourists wait for the bus...

...while we have a look around...

...

...some sort of cell tower we guess...

...kids on the playground wondering who the dorks are in the wierd clothes...

As the bus collects the passengers in front of the store...

...we think about continuing on ourselves...

Wait a minute.....it is lunchtime isn't it? Aren't you hungry EC?

Lets have something different....

Sorry for the overexposed plato de pescado

I kinda liked this pic from somewhere near where we just were

That doesn't really make any sense does it?

There is always a seemingly endless presence of school children, either walking to or from school, home or... god knows where. These girls waiting for the bus obliged our lenses.

Don't really know what was going on here, but this was a common sight.

Did I get us off track enough yet EC?

Not quite. Yer getting ahead just a wee bit.

Well, technically, yes, it's lunchtime. Or close enough. We're just not eating yet. We have more 'splorin' to do. After our snack which I'm pretty sure included ice cream.

Nope. Yer doing just fine. Keep tossing in the bones.

Thanks, Tim, Bill and Timba. Glad someone's still out there reading. This was one of the most interesting days.

Now, where were we...?

Snack time over and the crowd at the store rolling away on the bus, we gear up and ride.

You recall the fork earlier in the day...

...we take the other leg...

...or a leg off the leg...there were a few of them to choose from...

It was around here if you're following along with your map.

Cell phone pics don't do it justice.

The houses run from one extreme to the other...

...

...

A shot of the local realtor's sign is taken while I wonder how the kids survive with that electrical panel wide open.

Eventually the road peters out to a trail into the parque where the 'No fun' signs are proudly displayed.

We check our maps...

...make our way back to another turn...

...taking a moment to smell the flowers. Or at least photograph them.

Cell phone version...

...camera version...

You be the judge.

Another bridge...

...leads to a gated road...

We make our way back...

...

...to the fork from this morning...

...following the two-headed horse...

...

...back past the school yard with yet another shift of students...

...to the restaurant we'd seen next to the store earlier.

It's on the rustic side...

We head in, order up some lunch...

...update our maps of where we think we've been today...

...and watch the beauty behind the counter prepare our meals.

She brings it over...

...trout! Or la trucha.

In comparison to this place, the Pelicano where we stayed the night before and had the trout was on the foo-foo side of things. Relatively speaking. I'm here to tell you this trout is even better than that!

While scarfing down our late lunch we discuss the day's ride and our plans. While it's been a great little ride it's now early afternoon and we still haven't found Alaska or Siberia...

Glad to hear it. Thank you.

In my limited experience (and what I've read on the interweb so it must be true) February/March is the perfect time to visit. Especially if your friends back home have snow while yer gone.

Thanks for coming along.
