Not understanding the Nikki worship. She's a cool chick, yes. I'd like to ride with her, sure. Steal her? Idolize her into something she's not? Uh, no thanks.

But it was a great ride, and I'm a fan of both riders. I look forward to the next ride report. I'm glad you're going with 2 riders, 2 bikes. Things are much better that way!

Great RR. I especially love the fact that you live just down the road from me.

For Gear, have you tried going to Motoliberty? They are in Dallas at the Royal and I35, just after the I635 intersection. Great place, big selection, and they have a dressing room to try on stuff.

Great RR. Good interview.

You guys seemed to have packed really light by all means.

(Besides the 3 hardcover books.)

What DIDN'T you use?

Great RR!

Thoroughly enjoyed your RR. Great photography too! I got my mc license in McKinney, TX back in '78; 1 honk was a right turn, 2 honks was a left...

Pillow Question

I just picked up an inflatable back packing pillow at REI, then read your info, below, and I'm wondering if I did the right thing. I bought the Cocoon brand inflatable for about $30. I've tried it at home one night, and I'm just not sure it's going to be comfortable on my upcoming Alaska trip.

What foam one did you get, instead? Maybe I'll go make the exchange before the start of my trip, rather than near the end, like you did!

[QUOTE=jglow;15803918] Redding, CA to Ely, NV

We hit Reno and make a quick stop at the REI to do an exchange. See, we bought this air pillow for Nikki before the trip. It packed down to the size of a small pair of socks, and was insulated as well. Everything looked good on paper, but she used it the very first night way back in Kansas and was not very impressed. We (I) decided that she must be using it wrong, so for the next several nights she tried every variation in inflation pressures, pillow position, wrapping it in articles of clothing, but nothing worked. By this time we were into Montana, and had passed all the REI’s that we would encounter until Washington -- She was gonna be stuck with it for a while.

Finally in Reno we remember and exchanged the pillow for a standard foam one.

Yeah, the one that we were unhappy with was the cocoon inflatable pillow. If you tried it at home and didn't like it, odds are that you will hate it camping . It's a bummer because the thing packs down to the size of a small pair of socks. We went with the old stand by roll-up cotton pillow, REI brand, $9.

It doesn't pack near as small, but it's by no means huge. We have been happy enough with them.
