F650GS change oil question

Hi,

I just changed the oil on my new F650Gs after 1,280 kilometers.
Question:
1. Why is it difficult to drain out the oil? Seems not everything comes out in one go.
2. Is it normal for the oil to have bubbles thru the peep hole after a run?

Thanks in advance!

Scavenge pumps pump more oil than pressure pumps. If/when pressure pump gets behind scavenge pump on oil flow, the scavenge pump will suck some air. Some dry sump engine oil tanks have a de-airetor (sp?) to keep the froth down.

So tiny bubbles in your oil is a "design feature".

Check out the oil change FAQ at f650.com.

You'll be very happy that you did.

The accessibilty to the res plug is terrible. I ended up drilling a hole in the LH plastic to get to the res plug and using a rubber cap to cover the hole while riding. having to take that much plastic apart just to change the oil is a joke.

If I run it till its hot, use the sidestand to drain the res, centerstand for the sump and filter, I can get most of the oil out.

As for bubbles, yes quite normal. My explanation mirrors the pot-head's with the addition that the oil shoots back into the res from the top through an air gap of a few inches and it stirs things up quite a bit.

Pot-head?

Nice pix. You all got sump thread stuck in your fingers? Three for one oil change? "I'll take the resevoir, you get the sump, and you get the filter."

Apology accepted. Let's move on to the beer drinking.
I thought for a second it was from my being close to Ann Arbor, a liberal stronghold and home of the dreaded EPA (We can't even get Speedvision on local cable. Must be verbotten, or something.)
