A little ride on the TWVT

I've been all winter wanting to ride the TWVT. I've got new rubber and day to kill so I headed west to see if the TWVT is as good as everyone says. I leave Harrisonburg a little late at 9:30(shift work). The combination of a late start and my weak GPSing ability put me in Monterey and this is the second weekend of their Maple festival, so I become a part of a 2 mile long, 5mph crawl.

Looking north just outside of Montery.

I eventually get to the section of the TWVT I planned to ride and find a little snow still left. Hopefully the last of the season.

Back into West Virginia, through Rider Gap.

A quick stop at the Watoga entrance to put my stuff in ziplock bags before hitting the first Alt route. I have seen other reports of "sookie holes" and "mud snakes" so I didn't want to chance it. It turned out to be a good idea.

I get to the first water crossing and I think, cool, I need to get a shot of this. After losing count of the water crossings I quit taking pics of 'em. Here's three.

Here I'm thinking "I sure could use that saw scottP ordered for me this winter".

So this I'm thinking is a "sookie hole".

I didn't take a picture of the first one because it didn't look like much, but when I rode through it I had water over my boots. I wasn't going to make that mistake again so I found a tree limb to check the depth and hell it wasn't more than four inches deep all the way across. Not to worry there were plenty more deep holes to come but I didn't take any pics, I was just trying to get out of there at that point. That Alt run would be fun with a group but it got a little worrisome flying solo.

After taking a whipping on the Alt you get put on this 16 mile stretch of heaven.

180 to left

followed by 180 to the right

Greenbrier River

Leaving for now, but this TWVT is going to need alot more investigating.

Grabbed a shot of Humpback bridge on the way home.

Nice first of many trips to WV this year.

Much thanks to intothenew for sharing this.

Thanks for the report. Things look much better than I would have thought this time of year.

You should be set for the year. You scrubbed the new tires, and washed your boots inside and out.

Awesome looking ride! I can see I need to learn more about this TWVT... nice! Let me know next time you do some "investigative riding" on that..if you need another "investigator" that is.

Hero re-route option would be the red lines flipped 180 degrees!

Nice pics Kev, thanks for sharing. I know I had a blast last summer when I ran a bit of the TWVT. Some day I'll have to run the whole thing. Maybe even throw in a little of those other routes that our neighbors to the north and south have put together to connect to it; kinda like a purely east coast TAT!

Scott, I did splash a lot of nasty water out of the holes. So we should be good unless it rains. If it rains much we're................

I'm with you Denis. I'll probably never get to do the TAT so the TET is all I've got. From what I saw yesterday I can live with that for a while.

I have to remember this.
I could do some of this if I plan a 2 day trip.
It's on my list.
Thanks
