In the wild woods
hides a gem of devotion:
![]() Evidence of settling in the area dates back to the Neolithic and the site has preserved that feel. Here you are the odd one out. The hill was a proven sacred place in the Iron Age because of the natural wells. In the Middle Ages these attracted still large crowds so the clergy 'modernized' the site to accommodate the visitors. The chapel today is of the 19th century. Devotion still large: grateful people tie colored ribbons to the building.

Beecher Bible and Rifle Church, Wabaunsee, KS
![]() Named for Henry Ward Beecher, a Brooklyn, NY, minister whose church provided bibles, guns and money to abolitionists in Kansas, to support their efforts to bring KS into the union as a free state. The guns, along with the bibles, were in boxes marked "Beecher's Bibles." |
