Weekend trip ideas out of Manhattan?

Hi all,

My girlfriend and I are taking BMW up on their test ride program this coming weekend for a R1200GS (or GSA - TBD). I'm very close to pulling the trigger and thought a longish trip would be the clincher. However, I've had limited riding experience in this part of the country and am looking to any members for suggestions on scenic, fun bike roads - even non-paved/gravel for a little bit. (The GS has street tires if I recall so can't veer to far off road). Anyhow, I was hoping to take one route and stop for the night somewhere and then head back via another route.

All recommendations welcome.

Thanks,

Escape from New York?

How about a weekend trip to Adirondack or the Catskills? Take Henry Hudson (Rt 9) to Saw Mill Pkwy north to Taconic State Pkwy. That way you can enjoy decent scenic ride near NYC. Not sure of weather for coming weekend unless you have some heated gears. Was quite chilly last weekend at the Bear Mountain area.

Thanks,
search the forums for tnjt or tpat and do the road or off road easier parts of it.
(avoid sands of pine barrens)
depending on what portion you pick easily takes days riding to go 40miles...

take i80 out of town to nj 519 to pa 611 to 32 ...then points south philly etc.

i80 to tpat and follow north at bloomsburg (i think?)

not sure if youll have a gps on your rental..
you getting thus from bmw manhattan?

Thanks all for the ideas.

Alaska - tough for a weekend.

Have biked and driven Rt 9 - pretty without a doubt.

I found the motorcycle roads website and scrabbled together some routes to get to Amish country (never been there). Yes - weather is not balmy this weekend. Winter gear is out for sure.

I'll post the routes that stood out and I'll look into the suggestions.

No gps - good old fashioned dead reckoning (and notepad/rear seat navigator - "it's the journey that matters")

Thanks again!
