I am returning in 2013 on a DL1000. I have a great time every trip! Meet lots of folks and view lots of wildlife. A dozen grizzlies on the last trip to AK. 100's of photos taken. If I was afraid of hitting wildlife at 80 MPH I would never leave my house as there are many more wildlife collisions here in MI than on the AK HWY. I have hit two big deer here and none on the AK HWY.

PS: I own a DRZ400 and hope to buy a DR650 this weekend.
Just curious if you took the VTX on the Dalton, Dempster or the Denali Highways? Seems like that would not be too much fun and they are some of the biggest attractions for moto riders. On the other hand, with a 16 tooth CS sprocket, Ive done close to 1000 mile days on numerous occasions and over 1000 miles once.

I've been using the DR650 more and more since I added the hard cases last year. The lowerd Procycle pegs really help too. I like about 300 to 500 miles per day depending on the roads, if its lots of dirt I do less of course.

I normally use the Pelicans when I'm staying in hotels, I do have a GIVI top case... I just don't like how it looks...

So, I just put a dry bag on the rack when camping. Here is my current set up for weekend rides:

I'm debating about adding a pelican as a top case, I ride mainly forestry roads and other mild stuff. It would be nice to have a small top case for misc stuff.

I still like the stock gearing the best, I have tried other sprockets with the 520 set up. I'll probably just go back to a 15/42 525 next time. I do ride with my ST buddies and keep up just fine, I'm a FJR rider too. For some reason the DR650 is my favorite even for touring. I guess its because its so easy to ride on gravel roads even loaded up for long trips. I don't like being limited by a big ST or even my past KTM 950. The DR650 will do 75 mph all day, I guess thats enough for me... I'm getting old..

I slab alot to get where I like to ride, I've found the Shinko 700/705 combo works well. Long wearing on pavement and cheap. The 700 front feels a little better on dirt roads, since I live on a dirt road I perfer the slightly more aggressive front.

I'm not sure that protection is their primary goal:

Yet another boot thread?
